- Hi! Tell me about Decision to Hate. Why did you decide to name the band with such title? What kind of ideas do you explore?
Thogarma: HELL-o! When we formed the band as a project first in 2001 the name was the idea of a friend, who became our webmaster and sadly passed away a few years ago. It´s all based upon hatred against mankind, life and mainly death. You hate fukking humans, you are a fukking human yourself, you hate yourself.
- “Anti-human Art” album was released last year. How does that make you feel? Do you feel you have put album into masses without any wishes to change something now?
Thogarma: We are still enthusiastic about the result. Concept, artwork, sound… Nothing I want to change at the moment.
Cassiel: I think its too early to consider changings on the album. You need much more distance to reflect that. But I am not utterly satisfied with the drum sound. Maybe the bassdrum sound will be a little bit more organic on the next record.
- Tell me more about “Anti-human Art”? Album ideas etc…
Cassiel: The process of composing the songs and the recordings finally took about ten years because of numerous lineup changes particulary at the guitar position. Due to that fact there was no concept in the beginning of the process. When I recorded the piano pieces for the album I realized that we have nine piano songs and nine metal songs and that reminded me of Dantes Divine Comedy with its nine circles of hell. So we framed this piano pieces around the metal songs and named it after the nine circles of hell from Dante. I think it fits perfectly with regards to content of Thogarmas lyrical concept.
- Where do you take all inspiration from?
Thogarma: People. Transforming hatred against humanity into art. Better to deal with anger like that, the other variant leads straight to prison. Another inspiration is mother nature of course, delivering the epic moments.
- In your opinion, what is the best way to define Decision to Hate’s sound?
Thogarma: Black Death Metal musically open-minded, lyrically totally intolerant – framed by piano tracks on “Anti-Human Art”.
- So, are you on hiatus now, just relaxed and looking for album feedbacks, or did you started to compose new stuff immediately?
Thogarma: We received a lot of feedback for the album but already wrote 3-4 new songs since our songwriting is not dependent on the opinion of others. We are playing “My escape into nature”, “Traitors first” and an yet unnamed intrumental song (some lyrics may follow) live already. Some basics for other new songs are recorded (for ourselves), so maybe around 50% of a new album is done.
- What are your main musical influences? How huge is their influence in your sound?
Thogarma: Everyone in the band has his own taste and brings different influences. Of course we all worship the old gods/ heroes of Death, Thrash & Black Metal. As a songwriter, you shouldn’t wear blinkers. If you´re only listen to “Transylvanian Hunger” your music will be nothing but a cheap clone.
Cassiel: I didn´t listen to metal that much in the last years. A lot of new trends notably all these „60er 70er Retro Rock“ things didn´t cach me at all. For me metal 2019 is a bit boring. There are a few good releases but no comparsion with the releases of the eightees and early ninetees. So I get a lot of musical influences from other genres like classical music, electronic music and ambient music. Maybe some of it found a way in our music at some points. It is subconscious.
- Is there some well-known musician in particular that you would like to use in one of your upcoming albums?
Thogarma: No, it´s our music, haha! If we would have another voice or extremely special guitar soli on it, it would be difficult to play those songs live. But we have never talked about such options within the band. Who knows what the future holds…
- What is your personal strategy for making your music heard by a larger audience?
Thogarma: None, we aren´t heard by a larger audience by now, haha! We simply do what we like; if others like and understand it we appreciate that – if not, we don´t care. We also don’t want to be patronized by a record company just to sell a few more records. We’ve had contact with people who earn their money with promotion. Some of them just advised us to be just like everyone else from this current Death Metal wave, which should guarantee good reviews in the big magazines. Thanks, no.
Cassiel: I think it is not a shame to use the social media to spread your music in the world. All these refusals of so called „true and oldschool“ bands in the last years and the denial of using the social media and internet is absolutely boring for me. The time of sticking posters in undergrade crossings is over. I think a few bands should learn this bit by bit.
- Do you have any other hobby beside music?
Thogarma: We all are into nature, doing differant activities there… From hiking to mountaineering. Sometimes you can get something positive out of our hobbies for the band, like the photos from the artwork I took in the Alps and in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains. And we are interested in alcohol, from intoxicating with beer to collecting whisky.
- Are you all supported by your relatives towards your devotion to music?
Cassiel: No I can´t say that I am supported by them. What does supported mean? Listen to our music? Driving us to concerts or financing our records?!? If you mean things like that I am definitely not supported by them. A very exception is my brother Markus. He did the artwork for our last album and did the artwork for „Anti-Human Art“ too. He is a very big benefit for us and all media things of the band. Cheers to him!!!
Thogarma: My father thinks our music sounds like his drill.
- How’s the metal scene in Siegen right now? Is it easy to play gigs, to buy records etc there these days?
Thogarma: There are some great locations like the Vortex Surfer Musikclub and the Verstärker where we perform regular live rituals. Especially in the Vortex, interesting events often take place. Even bands like Obituary, Sodom, Protector, Napalm Death etc. have been guests already. There are many bands around in our hometown, from youngsters like Gorezilla to the very well-known legend Accu§er. The best adress to buy records is the Soundfile in Freudenberg. In the past we had the Kratzer, Rille and Funkhaus Schwunk but the younger fans around won´t know all this.
Cassiel: The metal scene of siegen can be described in three sentences: Everyone sleeps with the other. All people meet in the same locations with the same and lame jog trot. The cool people go to Decision to Hate concerts and support us (with their life).
- Thank you for answering my questions, see ya on the road!
Thogarma: Thank you very much for your support! Check out https://www.facebook.com/DecisionToHate for more information and https://decisiontohate.bandcamp.com/ for buying our music, merch and so on. Clean the scene!!!
