Interview When Plagues Collide

Hi, When Plagues Collide. “Tutor Of The Dying” released on November 2018. You must be excited?

We definitely are! We’ve gotten a lot of positive feedback on the album which is really nice to hear considering all the work we put in. We’re really proud of our debut album

First of all, we would like to know about the formation of the band. When and how was it formed? Do you think the band name ‘When Plagues Collide’ perfectly decribes your music and philosophy?

The summer of 2016 is when it all started , the 2 brothers Dergez(Vocals & Guitar) started looking for members to start a unique deathcore project. Wouter has a job as job recruiter and through this way he collided(pun intended) with our former drummer Tom Noppen. Through a simple facebook announcement Santy (Guitar)came along for a jam session and we hit it off immediatly. Our Bass player Bastiaan used to play guitar in a band with Tom so we asked him if he wanted to join our ranks at bass. An immediate yes is what we received. Later on Tom got a promotion on his job which rendered him unable to keep investing the necessary time this band needs. That’s were our new drummer Siebe came in the picture. 17 years old and crazy talented! And that is our current line up!

For the philosophy. The name When Plagues Collide originates from the difficulties of the multicultural society we face everyday. Think about religious warfare, terrorism, political antinomies, …

All these things together are a deadly cocktail for chaos. We look at these individual topics as Plagues and you see the picture everyday in the media what happens when they collide.

Okay now tell us something about “Tutor Of The Dying”, and the lyrical themes

behind each track. What are the ideas you wanted to put across?

The idea behind Tutor of the Dying is situated in finding true happiness. The way we see it, is that the blind following of social morals and influences could be deadly. It is too important to think and to stand up for yourself and your believes. Live YOUR life without letting you dictate which visions are right and wrong. We strongly believe that from the moment you live your life the way you want it to live, true happiness will be found. For Tutor of the Dying, different approaches were taken and lots of metaphors were used. Important, so we believe, to give every listener the freedom to interpret our songs their way and reflect on their own life. Happiness is found in several ways and will be different for me and you. If you listen to Messengers of the Holy Falsehood for example, you’ll hear the story of a prisoner of war which is watching at the preparation of his gallows. Thing is that he looks his death right into the eyes but he’s ok with it because he will be reunited with his long lost family.

Where and when did you record “Tutor Of The Dying”? Are you satisfied with it?

We recorded the album at Project Zero studio in Nijlen, Belgium and we couldn’t be more happy with the result.

We highly recommend this studio for heavy bands!

Are you gonna to release some official band merch?

We already got some for sale on our website www.whenplaguescollide.com
We got a few shirt designs, zippers , sunglasses , shorts, we’ll have a lot more coming up but you’ll see about that later.

What are When Plagues Collide’s musical and non-musical influences?

Musically we draw influences from a lot of metal genres, if you listen to the album you’ll find hints of black metal, more melodic stuff,, death metal, even beatdown. We don’t want to limit ourselves to only Deathcore.

Non musical influences would be life in general, religion and politics

Could you please express your personal views on religion and god?

We look at religion as significant cause for war since centuries, and (often) biggest form of hypocrasy. Since it’s prominent role in the existence of mankind, and all deadly acts -still (!!) on daily base in our ‘modern’ society, we cannot deny religion as a plague.

Our goal is to open eyes, do whatever you ought to be right, but with the necessary form of respect for one and other. Plenty metaphores are used on this album, but not when it comes to clerical abuse, and ignorance about the holy wars. There will never be any form of God which shall dictate our music, our lyrics or ‘verses’, but since the weight of this theme it just stays interesting to write our opinion down.

Shall we expect some gigs across USA or Europe near time?

There are some plans for that but we can’t really inform you guys about that at this time. You know how it goes, keep an eye on our social media!

When shall fans to expect something new from you? Videoclip, single, documentary etc?

Between “Tutor of the Dying” and the next album we might release a single and it might be with a videoclip. We’ll see! (again can’t really talk about this yet, sorry guys!)
A documentary are plans for the distant future perhaps when we have some more stuff released and more tours done. We wouldn’t have the proper footage to do one at this point.
