Track Premiere: Nocturnal Graves ‘Ecdysis, Shedding Weak Flesh’

Australia’s Nocturnal Graves, featuring current and ex-members of Denouncement Pyre and Deströyer 666, will unleash hell in the form of new album Titan on May 18th, 2018. The follow-up to 2013’s raging …from the Bloodline of Cain, Titan expands upon Nocturnal Graves’ sinister death/black formula. To wit, the track Decibel is honored to premiere, “Ecdysis, Shedding Weak Flesh,” is a cauldron of old-school heavy metal malice, black metal spirit, and death metal cemetery mist. It’s the same kind of evil concoction that once fueled the veins of Tiamat, Therion, and Samael, but is now coursing through the souls of Aura Noir, Nifelheim, and Sadistic Intent.

To wit, Nuclear Exterminator said the following to Queens of Steel in 2013: “Using melody enabled us to express ourselves with more depth to give the songs greater dimensions. Music is meant to evoke emotions, and [it] makes the more brutal parts have a bigger impact. That is what we were aiming for, that the whole record […from the Bloodline of Cain] moves and flows and has an emotional impact on the listener. When I’m listening to bands playing non-stop blast beats it usually ends up not sounding very ferocious and instead it all blurs into one monotone image. I’m not really interested in playing everything in a monotone fashion as it usually has little effect on the listener, unless non-stop brutality is what they’re looking for (which is, of course, fine because I still worship bands like Bestial Warlust, Blasphemy, Conqueror, etc.). That however is not where music begins and ends with me, nor the others in the band. We all like a vast array of music from the extreme, chaotic bands I mentioned, to heavy metal, rock, post-punk, and ambient/industrial/noise music. I don’t think any of us are particularly close-minded when it comes to music so we prefer to use the tools we have rather than shy away from them because some 16-year old tough guy who just discovered Beherit might think anything less than noise is for wimps. Fuck them!”

If that statement doesn’t sum up Nocturnal Graves in present then nothing will, ’cause new track, “Ecdysis, Shedding Weak Flesh,” roars out of the abyss with tireless determination and the hottest fire. That it also stretches the boundaries of the two genres it fuses (together) is also a hallmark of Nocturnal Graves’ crepuscular savvy. They’re perfectly aware that saturation of a single idea, however great, will lead to eventual ambivalence. So, bring on “Ecdysis, Shedding Weak Flesh!” Worship the old gods to new Nocturnal Graves!

** Nocturnal Graves new album, Titan, is out May 18th on Season of Mist. Pre-orders for CD and LP are HERE, if you dare.
