Interview MILE

Hi, Mile. Greetings from Sick and Destroy team. What are you up to these days?

Hi there! Right now we are preparing for a tour in Brazil that will take place in the beginning of February! We also released our second full-length album so we are trying to spread it as much as possible as well.

Would you please introduce your band to our readers who are not aware of your band and music?

We are a modern heavy metal band who combines heavy riffs and melodies to create a modern mix between hard rock and heavy metal. The music is more of a In Flames, Avenged Sevenfold, Five Finger Death Punch style and the song has more inspiration from Iron Maiden and Queen.

Give us a little insight into the formation of the band. When and how did it happen?

The band was created 2012 by former members of Cabinett – Marcus ”Masken” Karlsson (Vocals), Fredrik Palm (Guitar) and Marcus ”Folke” Bass – The line-up was completed by drummer Dennis Kjellgren and guitarist David ”Dave” Wallberg. The new project was named Mile. In 2015, Niklas ”Nike” Tidaholm replaces one of the founders, bassist Marcus Folke. The line-up as stayed the same since 2015.

At what age did you guys start playing instruments? Since when are you into metal music?

Some of us began when we were 8 or 9 while others began much later when we were 15. All of us has always been into metal in some kind, some us more than others. My (Niklas) personal first touch with metal was when I was 4 years old and heard Stargazer by Rainbow. After that I was hooked for life.

Mile recently released “The World in Focus”. Tell us something about it. Walk us through all the tracks lyrics and meaning.

This one is a really heavy one, packed with screaming guitars, heavenly melodies, pumping drums and bass that altogether becomes a nasty good record. Modest, right? The first track “Crying in your sleep” gives you a taste of what the whole album will sound like. High notes, heavy breakdowns, melodic choruses and a helluva tempo! The lyrics handle mental illness and the perspective of someone who is dealing with a monster inside the persons own mind, a kind of panic attack. “Why Won’t You (Die Motherf***er)” is the second track and starts of right away! It has a catchy chorus combined with a heavy breakdown that makes the listener want to jump up and down. The lyrics are about hate, the hate you can feel towards another human being. “Sky is Red” is more scaled down and have a lower tempo which goes well with the meaning of the song. The lyrics handle is about taking control seize the moment and create something bigger than yourself in the sometimes chaotic world we live in. “Can You Feel the Night” is about the feeling that you either should hold on to someone, maybe even possessed by someone or make distance to prove that you don’t need the other person. You do not really know how you should feel and react. Now this one is really catchy, radio-friendly if you want to call it that but still with heavy riffs. The fifth song “Burning” stands out on the album as some Nu-metal influences can be heard, the verse is more in your face and angry than others. The lyrics are about handling a lot of feelings and finding a way out of a personal hell while fighting against someone or something that you don’t even understand. “Fade Away” has a country touch with a start with only song and acoustic guitar. Lyrically it’s about bullying and later on taking a stand and show others that you are not willing anymore to take their shit. Track number seven “Sacrifice” is about human desire and what you are willing to sacrifice to get what you want. There is a LOT of heavy, heavy riffing going around here so be aware! “Dressed in Black” was our first single of this album and is about all people equal worth, no matter where you come from. The music is catchy and makes you want to dance! The second to last track “When Time Goes By” begins with an 8-bit, videogame touch to then evolve in a jump suitable riff that goes along through the whole song. The lyrics is about doing what is right, not fleeing but facing your fears in a world spread with lies. “We Stand Tall” is the last track and as the title gives away it’s about standing together as a united piece and stand tall. This track is a typically “Mile” song with heavy guitars and Masken’s lovely voice mixed altogether making a modern, almost hockey like, sing-a-long track.

How has been the response so far by the listeners? Have you started working on new songs already?

The response has been great! A lot of positive reviews by both listeners and journalists. We actually have some new material that we’re working on but that’s for the future. A new video is in the pipeline as well.

When and where did you play your first gig? How was the experience of going live for the first time?

In the current formation was in the summer of 2015 at Törebodafestivalen. Bands such as Twisted Sister and Europe also performed at this festival. It was a great experience, of course were we all nervous but it went actually really good. Before Niklas joined the band had its first gig in 2013 has support for another local band.

What, according to you, is the secret behind band’s success?

Hard work and the will to give everything, every time, always. No matter what the situation.

Ever had an epic fail moment during a gig?

Some equipment have stopped working and so but nothing really big. We have always been able the finish the set.

If asked to differentiate Mile from other bands in your country, how would you like to respond to it?

We have a mix of both the melodic European style of metal mixed with the “right-in-your-face” metal from America to create a modern style of heavy metal which give us the “Mile-sound”.

The band has seen not many change in line up since the formation of the band. Is it because, everyone in the band is doing his job perfectly? How compatible are band members with each other?

All the members of the band put the music and the band in first place, always. Some maybe more than others but we always strive to become better both as a band and on a personal level as a musicians.

Which bands/ artists do you draw your influences from? Which are your favorite local bands?

Bands such as In Flames, Engel and Soilwork who have the characteristic Gothenburg-sound with heavy riffs and melodies. But also classic bands as Iron Maiden and Queen when it comes to the vocals. And of course some amercian touch with Avenged Sevenfold, Five Finger Death Punch, Metallica and Rage Against the Machine. Vengha is a good local band, as well as…

How do you guys manage jobs and gigs? Also how often do you guys gathering altogether just to fun?

We try to see each other at least one time a week. Under some periods it becomes more than that but we all like each other so it’s nice! We do it because it’s fun but we have all have the dream to live from playing our music. Every time we meet up and rehearsal, this is what we live for.

Mile is very promising formation. Talking of your future, 5 years from now, where do you see yourself?

Hopefully on a world tour as a support act to a bigger band, traveling around the globe to see the whole world. Also we should release one or even two more albums that will make every metalhead headbang until their necks snaps of! \m/

Well, that’s it. Thanks a lot for your time.
