Interview Sator Malus

Good day Naberius and Sator Malus! How are you guys doing these days?

We are doing great thanks. We are very satisfied with our debut release and the response we get.

First of all, please introduce your band and band members to our readers.

Naberius (guitar) had parted ways with Cirith Gorgor earlier due to lack of time and differences in music style. With a lot of own material at hand it soon became time to start something new. Sator Malus was formed in August 2012 shortly after Naberius and drummer VVvlfskvvintvs (Hooded Priest, The Spirit Cabinet, Inverted Cross) met.

In 2014 Allocer (Walpurgisnacht, Weemoed, Inverted Cross) joined forces as a second guitarist. Most of the lyrics and titles came from his hand, as well as the band name.

Soon Pestus (ex-As It Burns) joined as our vocalist and Marbas (ex-Depredation, ex-World Funeral, ex-Grimm) on bass, making the line-up complete.

Early 2017 Marbas left the band. Eligos (Kaiserschlacht, ex-Abaddon, ex-Depredation, ex-World Funeral), owner of Kaiserschlacht Studio, where Dark Matters was recorded, immediately replaced Marbas. This resulted in a stable and dedicated formation.

I’d like to know about the formation of the band. How did you guys meet and all. Also, is there any special story behind the band title?

The band title can be translated as ‘Father of sin’ or  ‘Sower of evil’, etc. Malus is also the forbidden fruit in the bible, the root of sin.

I expect a long reply for this one. Can you please tell us about the concept and lyrical themes of all your previous releases?

This is our debut album. Our music is all about our aversion against the flaws of humanity, getting more superficial and ignorant each day. Only consuming and following the herd, obliging the establishment. Not thinking for themselves (religion, society, sticking to rules and laws made by others). We are about self-development, staying close to nature and our roots, about preserving elitist morals. Humanity is null in the universe surrounding us, this is an important topic on Dark Matters. It is about the matter that we are made of, where it came from and the relatively very short amount of time that it is ours.

Is there any special reason for choosing your music conception?

The songs on ‘Dark Matters’ range from militant to melancholic, from majestic to moody, from grandeur to grief. We are all individuals who are quite critical towards humanity and we all share an interest in nature and science. The music fits the lyrical concept and album design perfectly in our opinion.

How do you guys manage to create music at all? What challenges do you face while writing and recording an album?

All music on Dark Matters was written by Naberius, who thinks that diversity in style and vibe between the songs is of great value. All songs were written over the course of years, they came out so differently due to different emotions, state of mind and development during this long period.

Our next album, for which the music is almost ready, will also contain some very early material, next to brand new tracks. Allocer will also contribute at least two songs on this album, coming, hopefully, somewhere in 2018 already. Waiting time shall be shorter, but good quality always comes first.

The biggest challenge at the moment is finding the time, and spend it efficiently. It takes us quite some time writing and rehearsing songs until we are all satisfied about the result. We are all quite busy professionally, musically and socially.

Your latest album ‘Dark Matters’ was released on June 30th via Forever Plagued. How was the experience working on the studio? Any funny or even sad happenings during the studio work?

We had a great time during the recordings at Kaiserschlacht Studio, as always there are some details that take a lot of attention and time, which can get a bit frustrating. The producer was very nice to work with and really took the time to fulfill our wishes. He became a good friend of us, the fact he plays bass in Sator Malus now says enough. We are really looking forward entering his studio again.

You guys are still underground/underrated, although your music has been appreciated by the critics worldwide. What, according to you, is the reason behind it?

This is our first release and we didn’t do a lot of gigs yet. We hope Dark Matters draws a lot of attention and that it will bring some great opportunities. We are very satisfied about the critics and attention we get at the moment.

Can you throw some light on your past as musicians?

As mentioned earlier we were and are all active in other bands, we all started listening to black metal when we were about 12-15 years old. We all played an instrument at that age, we all had some projects who sometimes died early, it was not always easy to find the right people unfortunately. At the moment we all have 2 or even 3 bands and are quite busy and satisfied with our musically lives.

Tell us about your favorite bands, from whom you gain inspiration. Are you having any favorite artist/band that has emerged from metal/rock soil?

Personally I’m inspired by a lot and very diverse black metal bands, both old and new. For example bands like Thunderbolt (Poland), Urgehal, Dissection, Walknut, Imperium Dekadenz, Svartidaudi, Ascension, etc.

How is the metal scene going in your country?

The black metal scene is quite flourishing the last years in our opinion, there are some quality bands who are (getting) quite successful. The Netherlands used to have a known legacy mostly for death metal, but nowadays black metal is more flourishing too.

Tell us, if you have played abroad.

We haven’t had much shows at all, we are all pretty busy and we are quite selective. We don’t have interest in driving half the weekend to play at small, crappy venues for a pizza and one tray of beer. Unfortunately we didn’t have the opportunity to play abroad yet. We hope our album release will bring some interesting opportunities.

Are you working on any music videos, might it be videoclip or lyric video?

No, at the moment we are focusing on completing and rehearsing the music for our second full-length album, which is almost finished. We don’t expect to release any videos in the near future but our label Forever Plagued Records has made a video of our track `Endless Cycles Of Life And Death’.

Rapid fire section. Just for fun. So just chill, and just type the first thought that comes to your mind when you hear:

* Seed –  spread it
* Joe Satriani –
sick! My absolute favorite guitar virtuoso (Naberius)
* Death –
to mankind
* Jackson –
Randy Rhoads
* Loss –
A fact of life

Thanks a lot for your time! It’s really nice to know more about you. Would you like to say anything to your fans and our readers?
