Interview Keitzer

Hi, Keitzer. Greetings from Sick and Destroy team. What are you up to these days? Would you please introduce your band to our readers who are not aware of your band and music? Give us a little insight into the formation of the band. When and how did it happen?

Hi Sick and Destroy! Thank you for the interest in us! Basically we’re trying to not freeze as it’s pretty cold these days. And trying to get some spare time to gather for rehearsals…

We’re Keitzer, a Death-grind band from Germany formed in 1999, drawing our influences from all kinds of extreme music, be it Death, Grind, Hardcore, Thrash, black and so on, blending it into our own style of blasting music. The band was formed by members of local grind and hardcore bands, playing almost in the same lineup as it was founded.

At what age did you guys start playing instruments?

We all started when we were pre-teens.

Since when are you into metal music?

We all we’re about 9-12, I guess. For me my entrance drug was Iron Maiden and Sabbath, quickly thirsty for more and faster and harder stuff…

Keitzer recently released album, called Ascension. Tell us something about it. Walk us through all the tracks lyrics and meaning. How has been the response so far by the listeners?

We recorded it during 2 weekends in April/May with Jörg Uken at Soundlodge Studios, in Northern Germany. It’s the 2nd recording with him. We get along really well and so it’s a really relaxed and focused work. Sound wise we are really happy with it, for us being the best sound we ever managed to record.

Lyricwise it’s all about the ascension of darkness, mankind preparing it’s own doom, like the madness behind religion and it being used as justification for violence, people playing god as warlords, conquering and repressing everything in the way, committing genocides as symbol for their supremacy…

The responses that we experienced so far have been really positive.

Have you started working on new songs already?

We have… due to the fact that we’re all pretty occupied with daily life/ family/ jobs, that practices have pecome a bit rare, it all went a bit slow after the recordings.

When and where did you play your first gig?

It was in the summer of 1999, AZ Wuppertal.

How was the experience of going live for the first time?

We were pretty young, so we were pretty nervous. But the audience was good and appreciative, so half as bad in the end…

What, according to you, is the secret behind band’s success?

Playing good music, staying true to oneself, playing lots of shows, delivering a good live performance. And then a pinch of luck…

Ever had an epic fail moment during a gig?

Not really, fortunately very seldom it happened that we had to stop and restart a song, but nothing that would be a total disgrace…

If asked to differentiate Keitzer from other bands in your country, how would you like to respond to it?

We’re faster, heavier and better than anyone else, of course!

The band has seen not so many changes in line up since the formation of the band. Is it because, everyone in the band is doing his job perfectly?

We all knew each other way before we started Keitzer, as we’re all coming from the same small town in western Germany near the dutch borde,r being buddies before the band as we f.e. practiced door to door in the same youth centre’s basement for years. And all our abilities concerning playing instruments grew in the same way, so that we’re aware of what we can and want to play within the band. So, in a way, everyone is doing his job perfectly. I mean, a band is somewhat like an old marriage couple, you hang around a lot and start to really understand how the opposite works, that helps a lot with dealing with each other and get the music composed…

How compatible are band members with each other?

We’re pretty compatible with each other, even though we of course have some differences about opinions and strong characters as well… just like in every long term relationships, I guess. Sometimes it might be the best to just let each other do his things, and then gather again with new found strength and will…

Which bands/artists do you draw your influences from?

Oh, always a hard question, as we all grew up the last 3 decades with all kinds of good music, not only metal. When we started, our main influences were mainly german metal/grind bands like Mörser, Acme, Systral, as well as chaotic hc/ grind bands like reversal of man, unruh, Rorschach and the likes. Who always had a big impact to all of us was / is Bolt Thrower. And then all the great bands that just accompany you when you are active in the scene and walk through life with open ears/eyes.

Which are your favorite local bands?

In our city Münster, I’d name bands as Svffer, when you take our small country there are lot of bands as Cyness, Wojczech, Mörser, Zodiac, Sign of the wicked, Saligia, who are good and friendly bands…

How do you guys manage jobs and gigs?

That’s actually getting harder and harder as three of us have as well families to take care of, so we have to constantly look when where why we can play shows or not. If it’s 1-2 gigs a month, that’s quite many for us right now…

Also how often do you guys gathering altogether just to fun?

Back in the good old days that was much more, recently it has become quite rare, as I said, some of us have family and professional duties, so you rather stick to them in your sparetime. Our main gatherings are rehearsals by now…

Keitzer is very promising formation. Talking of your future, 5 years from now, where do you see yourself?

I see us basically at the same spot where we are now. I hope we can carry on writing the music that we personally admire in first place, hopefully liked by many as well, play good and maybe a bit bigger shows, meet cool people, record good records. If we can still do this in 5 years, all’s gioing well for us…

Well, that’s it. Thanks a lot for your time. Speak out to all your fans and supporters.

Thank you for your ongoing support, without you we wouldn’t be where we are. Buy our records and merch, enjoy the music. Thank you!
