Aftermoon – female fronted modern metal band from Ukraine! Fortunately musicians did really in depth response for every question, we are enjoyed, so I’m dare to bet you’ll like it too!

Hi! Tell me about Aftermoon. Why did you decide to name the band with such title? What kind of ideas do you explore?

AFTERMOON: We looked for an appropriate name for too long, burned two or three dictionaries. But then we performed a dark ritual to ask the ancient spirits about our future and the best name for the band, and they said “AFTERMOON”, so we couldn’t deny.
In fact, we were searching for something unusual, but still simple and memorable word. So the word-play “aftermoon” appeared. Talking about the meaning, “after moon” is a darkest and mysterious time of a day, a period before the dawn. But after it the sun always rise.

“Phase One” album was released several months ago. How does that makes you feel? Do you feel you have put album into masses without any wishes to change something now?

Valerie: This album was a result of a long process of understanding who we are in a musical way. It consists the songs from different periods of our life, some songs were written just before the album release and the other ones were written more than 3 years ago. That’s why the release was like a relief for me, like a long-awaited conclusion. But in the same time it was the main reason while we had a feeling that we have to change something in the tracks. And sometimes we did. Again and again. Frankly speaking, we rewrote some songs for two or even three times. But now we let the album go, in a good sense.

Ivan: It was a long journey for us, sometimes we compare it with a pregnancy and a birth of a child. We worked hard, trying to make “Phase One” the best we can. But sometimes you have to stop and let your work live its life. Even now we can change something, moreover, maybe it will make some remixes for these songs or someday “the greatest hits” compilation 🙂

Dima: This album I perceive like an overripe one. We worked on it for too long, I guess, trying to make it better, bring it to perfection. Sometimes it’s better to stop changes on a fixed point.

Tell me more about “Phase One”? Album ideas etc…

AFTERMOON: The main idea of our album was to introduce us to this world. Each song of “Phase one” tells you a story about love and hate, war and peace, inner fight and emotions, good and evil, relationships between people. There is no one integral idea that appears through the album, there are short novels about life, listening to which you may feel the same we do.

Where do you take all inspiration from?

Valerie: I’m rather sensitive persons, so all the senses, feelings and emotional experience affect me and inspire me. You can feel my mood and state of mind of that time, reading our lyrics. Inspiration is a great thing. I like the feeling that makes you wake up in the dead of night and write some heart-rending poetry or music. That’s incredible!

Roma: Emotion and life itself make a great influence on me and inspire me. And, of course, the influence comes from my favorite music, that I listen to constantly.

Ivan: I’m inspired by every minute of the life. The main influence – the work of our colleagues, that makes us create better, harder and stronger music.

In your opinion, what is the best way to define Aftermoon’s sound?

Valerie: For better understanding, I guess, we may say AFTERMOON plays some kind of modern-metal, because our music is up-to-date, we prefer contemporary electronic sound in some way. But if I have to describe our music for a person who doesn’t know what “modern-metal” means, I’d simple say: “Just listen to it and you will like it”.

Ivan: Imagine a melody, you will croon and a rhythm you will beat. Music that will lift you up, and put you down. It’s a catchy thing.

Dima: I’ d like to ask this question from the men’s point of view. Imagine the most beautiful Hollywood actress. Then imagine having sex with her. So AFTERMOON music is hundred times better! 🙂

So, are you on hiatus now, just relaxed and looking for album feedbacks, or did you started to compose new stuff immediately?

Valerie: Oh, we can’t stop creating! We have so many things on our mind and we have to share them with a world! Several drafts of the songs for a new album were written while we were recorded “Phase one”. We are full of ideas, so the process of creating some new stuff constantly goes on. And now, when we had a great presentation show in Kiev, returned from the European tour we are greatly inspired and completely ready to start the work in studio.

What are your main musical influences? How huge is their influence in your sound?

Ivan: We have a very different playlists, so we can not say we all are listening to the same music. This lets us to create something on the edge of different music genres and styles, exploring some interesting hooks and methods.

Dima: There are 5 “things”, that have the influence on the band: Valerie, Roma, Ivan, our new bass player Dima and me. We inspire each other. When we work or relax together the craziest things come up in our minds, new musical ideas born.

Is there some well-known musician in particular that you would like to use in one of your upcoming albums?

Valerie: Are you ready for a long wish list? As a vocalist, of course, I dream of singing together with so many famous musicians, for example with Brian Warner from Marilyn Manson, Corey Taylor (Slipknot, Stone Sour), David Draiman (Disturbed), Jonathan Davis (KoЯn), with Adam Levine from Maroon 5 (seriously, why not?), to play on one stage with my awesome finnish friends Poets of the Fall, and, of course, with my teenage first musical love Lauri Ylonen (The Rasmus). I may continue this list, despite I know for now it just a dream, but I will do my best to make it come true.

Ivan: Maybe, sometimes we will make some collaborations and duets. A few month ago we wrote a song, where the vocal and vibe of Jonathan Davis (Korn) or David Draiman (Disturbed) will be perfect. I dream to work with London Symphonic Orchestra, does it count as a well-known musicians?)

Dima: I’d like to meet and to speak with many outstanding musicians, no matter what instruments they play. I’d like to know more about their experience, their views on music, their opinion. It’s awesome to receive an advice from more experienced colleagues. But talking about collaboration… Personally, I’m not dreaming about it. Duets are profitable in a commercial sense, they help to broaden audience, enrich the sound. But do I like to play our music with someone in another manner? More likely, no. But time will show.

Roma: I guess all kinds of collaboration is really cool! I’d like to make a track with Arch Enemy and Nightwish some day!

What is your personal strategy for making your music heard by a larger audience?

AFTERMOON: To knock on every door. There is a lot of high-quality music that caters every tastes, so it’s kinda hard to impress fed-up audience. But we won’t give up. Our strategy, as a band, is simple: continue to work as hard as we can, create interesting, unique and competitive music, follow the dream and always stay on the road. And the rest of the things that help to promote the music, have to be done by professionals such as local promoters, journalists, PR managers, booking agents and labels. On our way we have already met some of these types of people and it’s a great pleasure to work with them, and we hope we will find more cool guys that will help us and together we will rock the world!

Do you have any other hobby beside music?

Ivan: my hobby is a bicycle and reading. Sometimes it’s hard to combine them, but I’m trying.

Valeri: I go to the gym and to the swimming pool several times a week. While answering this question, I caught myself thinking that basically all my favorite things to do are related to music and to the band. I like to work in Photoshop making our photos more pretty or drawing posters to upcoming shows, I like to cut the video, making a new video for the band, I like to look into the code of our website, while making its better. Oh my God. Seems, the band stole all my life 🙂

Roma: I like to eat and to sleep. That’s the excellent things, I highly recommend. And yet I like to spend a timein the kitchen, I’m a band’s cook.

Dima: Some time ago music was my main hobby, but now it’s my the one and only profession. And I’m happy about it. I’d like to do many different things, for example to go in for sport again. And for today the main hobby is reading. I read a lot and always.

Are you all supported by your relatives towards your devotion to music?

Dima: Both yes and no. Of course, I receive many supporting words and the relatives say I should follow the dream, do what I want and what I do the best. But I think they hope I will be tired “to play a musician”, give up and return to a normal office work. But I’m almost thirty and I’m still a great fan of my instrument, as well as when I was a schoolboy, listening to Pink Floyd.

Roma: Yes. My mom and dad believe in me more than I do. I thank them for their support.

Ivan: Yes, their support is very important for us, because they are our first listeners, fans and critics too. It might be a well-known fact, that there is no place better than a home, and we are happy to come back from the shows to our relatives, share with them our success and have a wise advise in the “moments of fight”.

Valerie: I can’t even imagine what would I do without this huge support from my relatives! I’m afraid without them I’d give up and can’t find a strength to go on in some moments of my life. I’m incredibly grateful for their help and that no matter what, they are always standing by my side.

How’s the metal scene in Ukraine right now? Is it easy to play gigs, to buy records etc there these days?

AFTERMOON: Our country is a young one, and so the metal scene is. There are a lot of interesting bands, that make great shows, play and sound really good. Ukrainian metal scene stands at the beginning of its formation. Unfortunately, some shows, we have here, may be called some kind of charity, because the expenses are higher than the benefit. And it’s not only about the money.

Thank you for answering my questions, see ya on the road!

AFTERMOON: Thank you very much for such interesting questions! It was a great pleasure to answer them, we enjoyed the interview a lot! Hope we will have some good news soon and will be ready for a new one!
