Interview Deathstorm

Deathstorm is thrash metal kick ass band from Austria! You must pay an atention to their music!

Hi! Tell me about Deathstorm. Why did you decide to name the band with such title? What kind of ideas do you explore?

Hey, thanks for having me. DEATHSTORM is a suitable name for a band playing the kind of music we play – it represents something fast and destructive. And being fast and destructive are two of the main ideas behind the band.

“Blood Beneath the Crypts” album was released several months ago. How does that makes you feel? Do you feel you have put album into masses without any wishes to change something now?

It feels good, as with every release. We’re proud of the record and wouldn’t change anything even though there are some bits and pieces here and there which will have to be done a bit different on the next release. I think that if you manage to release a record that is perfect to you, and I really mean perfect like 100%, it’s time to move on to other things.

Tell me more about “Blood Beneath the Crypts”? Album ideas etc…

BBTC was written partly before and after the release of “The Gallows EP” with the aim to create something more direct and straight forward compared to the previous releases. After really focusing on the songwriting and spending many hours in the rehearsal room the material came together quite easy. The recording sessions went smooth as well, finishing everything up in not more than 5 days. The cover was originally a b/w photograph I took which we then had painted by Linda Nygren. The color-scheme was influenced by one of the covers of the movie Halloween 3.

Where do you take all inspiration from?

Earlier DEATHSTORM material and horror.

In your opinion, what is the best way to define Deathstorm’s sound?

It’s non stop ultraviolence.

So, are you on hiatus now, just relaxed and looking for album feedbacks, or did you started to compose new stuff immediately?

We never relax and so should you. Always be fast, otherwise you’ll wimp out. There are already more than a few ideas for new songs floating around.

What are your main musical influences? How huge is their influence in your sound?

It’s obviously bands like KREATOR, SODOM and SLAYER but also stuff like METALLICA, KISS, JUDAS PRIEST, MOTÖRHEAD, BLACK SABBATH and all the other classics.

Is there some well-known musician in particular that you would like to use in one of your upcoming albums?

The only thing that comes to my mind at the moment would be having DIAMANDA GALAS doing some vocals. That would be quite interesting and terrifying.

Do you like cooperation with High Roller recs? Do they help you with tours etc?

Yes they are doing a really good job when it comes to distribution and all things concerning the record and its production. Gig-wise it’s all DIY.

What is your personal strategy for making your music heard by a larger audience?

Playing gigs and releasing music. We’re not supporters of this new generation of Facebook and Instagram bands.

Do you have any other hobby beside music?

Of corpse. Chasing and killing Hippies, shooting up junkies and petting cats to be precise.

Are you all supported by your relatives towards your devotion to music?

Yes one could say that even though I don’t think that anybody except for my parents knows what I’m doing.

How’s the metal scene in your local area right now? Is it easy to play gigs, to buy records etc there these days?

It’s only us, which is good. It’s easy to play gigs yes but we try to only play there about once every year. Buying good records is also possible but you have to constantly check out the local stores.

Thank you for answering my questions, see ya on the road!
