Interview Hellixxir

Answered by Matthieu Laforet

  • Hi! Give a brief history of Hellixxir, music style, and the members. What is the difference between your latest and the very first records?

Hellixxir was created in September 2001, but the real start-up of the band was in 2003 with the release of our first demo “The Cypress Forest”. At this time, we played heavy thrash metal mainly influenced by the bay area bands. War Within, our 1st album was released in 2007. A turning point was the year 2008, we changed our line up and decided to play a stronger and more extreme music, and it gave birth to our 2nd album “Corrupted Harmony” in the beginning of the year 2012, which is much more a thrash album with death metal influences.

Today’s band members are: Alexandre Manin, Romain Charbonnier, Baptiste Gastaldin, Laurent Couarraze and Matthieu Laforêt.

  • Give in more detail, some information about “The Black Fortress” and how well it sells?

The Black Fortress is our 3rd full-length album. It was released on October 18th. In my opinion, it has by far the darkest but at the same time the most refined and subtle atmosphere we ever created in our music. We worked a lot on the sound, the lyrics, the visuals. We are pretty proud of the end result. You really need to check it out!

At the moment, it sells pretty well thanks to our label Music Records, a vinyl disc should be available in February but we need more pre-orders to release it!

  • Hellixxir has signed with Music-Records, tell more about that?

Yes, we signed a contract with Music-Records for the distribution of The Black Fortress album.

Jeff and Valentin are doing a good job for us in France but also all over the world.

  • What inspires Hellixxir music and lyric writing? What does Hellixxir lyrics talk about?

Our main influence is no doubt 90s old school metal.

Lyric-wise, for instance, the Black Fortress is about the loss of self, ordinary madness and absurdity of today’s era expressed in a sharp and dark Thrash-Black metal. It also refers to the band’s headquarters, an old manor house in northern Isère that has a certain historical past, in which Hellixxir composed and recorded this third album.

  • Do you play live often? Do you like abroad gigs?

Not really, we are not a band that wants to play everyday everywhere. For personal and professional reasons it is very difficult to be all together available at the same time. Playing abroad is what we would like to do more often, but as you know it is not easy to find concerts with good conditions.

  • How often does the band practice and work on new material?

We usually practice once a week around 2-3 hours but I also take a lot of time myself to lay down guitar tracks which are the basics of future songs. I work with Sylvain, my sound engineer, and our drummer Romain. At the moment, I am working on new tracks for a future album.

  • How did the band come up with the name Hellixxir and tell what does it means for you?

The word Hellixxir is a combination of various words and significations. 1st, it comes from the word Elixir, which is a magical or medicinal potion; 2nd Hell, the spiritual realm of evil and suffering, 3rd XXI means the 21st century in which we live now. So we could define it as the Hell in which we all live today, and Hellixxir could be the only remedy. It is life, isn’t it?

  • What does the band plan on doing in the near time?

We just finished our new music video for the song “Oxymoronic way of life”

Here is the link:

We plan to record a 2nd music video from another The Black Fortress track

We also try to book some shows

  • Any message to Sick and Destroy readers?
