Hi! Give a brief history of Black River Sons, music style, and the members.
Hi! Before we start, thanks for the interest and we hope you’ll apologize us for our English. So, BRS is the result of the meeting of several musicians, guided by the love of this music that is southern rock! Emeric (lead singer/guitarist) created the band, composing ten songs alone. He called friends to play with him and send them the songs. He used to play in plenty of tribute band and wanted to create his own stuff. After a few line-ups, we came to what we are now. Vincent (drums) plays for 25 years in a lot of bands (the last before BRS was a Lynyrd Skynyrd tribute band where he met Emeric). Saïd (bass) used to play a lot with
Emeric too. Last but not least, Baptiste (guitar/singing) came into the band because he knew Vincent and the band was looking for a guitar player who can sing.
We like to call our music “Hard southern rock”. We’re addicted to twin guitar. Our main inspiration is, wait for fo it, all the band that made southern rock great: Lynyrd Skynyrd, ZZ Top, Molly Hatchet, Outlaw… but with some hard rock stuff!
Give in more detail, some information about “Poisons Stuff” and how well it sells?
We’re very proud of this record! We took a year to finalize this project. Vince recorded the whole drum part in the studio. Then, we recorded bass at home as well as the guitar parts.
Finally, Emeric and Baptiste came back to the studio to sing over all the material.
It’s a 10 songs record where you can find all the things we love: ballad, dobro, slide guitar, big riff…
Concerning the sales, we can’t tell! We just received the record writing these lines and it’ll be possible to buy it from 22 November. But, of course, we hope to sell it for a hundred!
Black River Sons have signed with Music-Records, tell more about that?
We took the decision to sign with a label to have several opportunities. First, to be listened all over the world (and not only in our native north of France), by circulating the record (to the newspaper, webzine…) and the video clip. It makes us be more serious and we know we have someone to lean on. Then, they help us to find gigs all over our country.
What is the difference between your latest and the very first records?
Our first record, Run like hell, is a 5 songs record we made alone, at home (except for the drum in-studio) to mainly canvass bars, festivals… We made it quick, (just a few months after our first rehearsal) to have support. It was a good way to make people know we exist and we’re here to make some Rock n roll! It also allowed us to save money to make Poison Stuff, the new album. It’s 2 different things, we took our time to think about the production and thing we’d like to add. It’s the result of 3 years of works and we had time to play the song live. We’re very happy to propose this mixture of what we are, what we built all over the years.
What inspires Black River Sons music and lyric writing? What does Black River Sons lyrics talk about?
As we said previously, our music is a mix of old school southern rock, Australian rock, hard rock, blues… We like to say it can please everyone.
Concerning the lyrics, it’s different, we have several songwriters. They can write about whatever they want! We have a song about a rupture, another more personal (dad issues) and of course, partying, dirty women…
Do you play live often? Do you like abroad gigs?
We used to play a lot when we started, at least 3 gigs a month (bars, little hall), to make us known by the audience and the local scene. Then we played in bigger places like festivals or performance hall. We had to call people to play but progressively, it was the opposite. Last year, we played less, to have the time to make our new record. Now we’re ready to submit Poison Stuff to the audience and support it on stage!
We don’t play a lot abroad, except in Belgium (which is near to our location). But we like it! It’s always good to meet new people.
How often do the band practice and work on new material?
We don’t practice a lot anymore! At the beginning, it was a 3 hours rehearsal a week.
Now, we know our songs and practice once a month, depending on the rhythm of our gigs.
Now that the record is done, we can think about new stuff. We have some ideas but not complete songs.
How did the band come up with the name Black River Sons and tell what does it means for you?
The name of the band is an idea of Vincent who’s very passionate about American history. We all like the “3 words” thing (like Black label society, black stone cherry…). So he was looking for a reference we can use. He remembered the black river in Missouri and Arkansas and it became obvious for him! He proposed the name and we were like: hum, ok, sounds good! It reflects our love and admiration for the south of the United States. And “sons” stands for what we are comparing to the pioneer of this music. We like to think we pay tribute to them.
What does the band plan on doing in the near time?
As we said, it’s now time to defend Poison stuff on stage and on the radio. We’ve planned to make a second video clip and have fun making music!
Any message to Sick and Destroy readers?
We hope you’d like our music! Keep on listening to a little band, whatever the style! It was a pleasure to answer those questions!
