1. Hail The End of Melancholy, welcome to Sick And Destroy. Before we start the interview, I would like you to introduce yourself to our readers. To begin with where are you from and a brief history about your band?
Olly: We’re from Russia, based in Saint-Petersburg, and as for me, I came from Siberia, Irkutsk, which is near the Lake Baikal. I’m very proud of it. Cool place on our earth. So, I started my music career there, but I always wanted move to the big city and even to the other country, maybe. Cause, here in Russia music industry, especially in metal, not at that level, like I want. So, I moved to St.-Petersburg and created “The End of Melancholy” with Peter. Now we’re recording our new album and planning go on tour next year.
2. How would you describe your music? And what bands have influenced you the most?
Olly: It is the mix of our feelings, emotions and experience of life. Marilyn Manson, NIN, Nirvana and Hole are my favourite.
Peter: It’s music, that sounds in my head, but I can’t find it anywhere. What I would like to listen to myself. I always loved gothic rock, post punk, bands such as Joy Division, Fields of the Nephilim, The Sisters of Mercy etc. And I tried to combine in our music the emotions of gothic rock and energy of metal. May be it’s alternative gothic rock)
3. How many and which albums/demos has The End of Melancholy released so far?
Olly: We released two music videos, EP and single. In 2018 was released “The Demon” (with the same name for the single) and earlier, in 2017 – video “Dolphins” with EP “Playing with shadows” . You can find it on our Bandcamp page, iTunes etc.
4. Which ones happens to be your favorite songs? Of The End of Melancholy and personal.
Olly: Of “The End of Melancholy” I like the most a song which is nit released yet;) And of other band let it be Manson – “Lay down your arms”.
Peter: Deftones – “Diamond Eyes” It was first metal song, who truly thrilled me.
5. Do you feel that The End of Melancholy’s music has changed over the years and how?
Olly: I can say that our music is changed from our first EP. It became more hard. I added more growl in vox.
Peter: We have become better in songwriting, production, musical skill. We changed sound. We have a new member, and our team has become even more powerful!
6. How much time does it take for The End of Melancholy to record an album?
Peter: Most of the time takes songwriting and sound production – it’s 80% of the whole process. Work on the song can last up to two months, including all stages – from the idea to the working demo. If the track is successful with the first chords – a demo can be done in 2-3 weeks. Under the demo, I mean a completely ready-made mix, which you can work with at the studio. But I still have to go to work, it also slows down the process of recording.
7. Tell us something more about The Demon (Single).
Olly: Well, “The Demon” is about the dark moments in my life, a misery experience, but “enlightenment through the pain”, you know. Demon includes several sick relationships I had. Karma-love-story and a karma-friend. Everybody have the same, I’m sure. I tried to express those destructive feelings while I was “The Demon” in the video. For example: “I feel it in your touch – cold veins and black heart”. You always feel yourself bad with somebody, but at the same time you want it, you need it, something like an obsession. These marks are help you to understand – it’s not good relationships. This man or woman is like the demon “craving for the light In your eyes”. Something I want to tell you about karma-relationships. You just need to make a decision –to stop it in all ways. You need to understand – it is your test, you need to live through this. It will gave you MORE than you have now. It will bring you a new level of your mind and soul. And you know what? I did it! I free my demon. So, that’sit. Free yours.
8. Whats next? Working on any new album? If so, some details please.
Olly: Now it’s hard to tell about the details of the next album, cause we’re preparing to realese the first one. But, sure there will be the next album.
Peter: I have ideas, that can’t be realized in the current album, so I think, we will make a single next, and then a new album.
9. Any tours, gigs for promotion of latest album?
Olly: Yes, we’re planning tours next year, but it’s too early to talk about dates. Btw, we are looking for a good booking agency. May be you can advise someone?
10. Any future plans for playing in Europe or USA?
Peter: Of course! USA the most difficult and the most desirable direction for us, and I hope, we will find someone, who will help us with the organization. Now we are working in this direction, but the main forces go to the studio work.
11. Has The End of Melancholy done any opening acts for other major heavy weight bands? If yes, then when and where?
Peter: In 2017 we have performed with Theatres des Vampires, Hanzel und Gretyl and Centhron in Moscow. It was really great show, and I think not the last)
12. What do you feel about the Metal Scene there in your country?
Olly: It’s slowly growing…
Peter: I know, that European and American labels work with some metal groups from Russia, but it’s not enough. Russian scene really grow up, but we don’t have here metal music industry, no real music business. All bands are left to themselves and no one knows about them. Have you heard about us?
13. Any messages for the readers?
Olly: Support bands you listen to! Go on shows to feel this powerful energy of metal music! Buy merch and releases – it helps us to do something new.
