A Breach of Silence interview

Hi! Please state your name and what you do in the band?
My name is Blair Layt and I sing and play bass.

A Breach of Silence. Greetings from Sick and Destroy team. What are you up to these days?
Hi guys! We’re down here in Aussieland writing new music for our 4th album and playing shows around our country at the moment. Also fitting in time to work our day jobs too.

Would you please introduce your band to our readers who are not aware of your band and music?
We’re a 5 piece metal band from Brisbane, Australia. Our sound is fast, heavy, and a melodic mix of metal core and power metal. But hold the cheese, if you know what I mean haha.

Give us a little insight into the formation of the band. When and how did it happen?
Myself and Cossie started Breach back in ’09 with a few friends at the time. We experimented our sound over the years as a few members changed and we believe it’s taken us 3 albums to evolve to the sound we have at the moment with our current solid line up. All 5 of us click so well now and we believe it shows in our latest music.

At what age did you guys start playing instruments? Since when are you into metal music?
I come from a musical family so I can’t really remember when I started playing around with music. As a small child I learned piano, then through school I learned Cello and Guitar, as well as learning proper singing techniques along the way too. I started listening to Metal in primary school. My brother introduced me to it and I haven’t looked back. I believe it’s so infectious because of its complexity. It’s one of the main thing that attracts me to a song/band.

Tell us something about Secretsо. Walk us through all the tracks lyrics and meaning.
Secrets represents a very dark time in our lives for many different individual reasons. We were going through depression, some of us financial struggle, some social, but we all managed to pull eachother together and write an album about it. Each song representing a dark time in one of our lives at some point.

For example, I wrote the lyrics to Fair Weather Friends about all those fake friends our there that run and hide when times get tough.

Falling Away we wrote about the struggle bands have currently with the digital industry.

It’s an album of therapy for us that we needed to do. And we’re proud of the result.

How has been the response so far by the listeners? Have you started working on new songs already?
We were really happy with the response of Secrets! We took a slight gamble with our sound changing a little, but we think it just shows the latest leg in our bands evolution. We’re now heavily into writing our 4th album. Name obviously unknown yet 😉

When and where did you play your first gig? How was the experience of going live for the first time?
We played our first gig about 8 years ago in a pub here in Brisbane that doesn’t exist anymore! It was a heavy metal club called the Stepp Inn. Ah so much nostalgia.

What, according to you, is the secret behind bands success?
I’d have to say perseverance. The only road to success is an organic one. If you rocket to fame with one song, you’ll fall faster than you rose. If you take your time and get a good foundation underneath you, you’ll have a better chance of having success in the music industry. That is just my opinion though.

Ever had an epic fail moment during a gig?
Not too may fails actually. We’ve been pretty lucky! Apart from your typical drunken stories, we’ve been able to keep it all together when we’re on stage.

If asked to differentiate A Breach of Silence from other bands in your country, how would you like to respond to it?
We’re a fast, heavy cross between contemporary metalcore and melodic metal… if you have to label it as something. We joke that it’s called “Powercore”.

Which bands/ artists do you draw your influences from? Which are your favorite local bands?
Parkway Drive, As I Lay Dying, Dio, Killswitch Engage, Slipknot, Pantera.

How do you guys manage jobs and gigs? Also how often do you guys gathering altogether just to fun?
Sometimes it can be hard managing full time work and gigs, but I guess our bosses are cool with it. We manage to not let it interfere too much with our day jobs. Tours are usually holidays or unpaid leave haha.

We always hang out together though. We’re all good mates that get on well with each other so we’re always together anyway.

A Breach of Silence is very promising formation. Talking of your future, 5 years from now, where do you see yourself?
Hopefully touring the world playing shows all over the globe!
