Interview WALLS OF BABYLON

Hi! Please introduce WALLS OF BABYLON to the readers.

Hi guys we are Walls Of Babylon and we are proud to introduce you to our sphere of introspection, to our portrait of memories.

Tell us more about your coming debut album “A Portrait of Memories”.

“A Portrait of Memories” is an album full of experiences, about our life and music, about our friendship and “youthness”. This is our life and how we approaced it.

How is it easy to live and survive in your part of Italy? Is there strong metal scene or just attempts to have some strong scene?

We play power progressive metal and in our part of Italy,a region called Marche, there isnt a proper scene, only a few underground band, like us, that try to came out from the mud of our garages or cellars.

The higest dream for those bands is to reach the same level of DGM, Rapsody of Fire or Labyrint, the greatest Italian bands… and we are here trying to get closer to them

When did you start writing music – and what or who were your early passions and influences?

Everyone of us started play at the age of fifteen, and after a few experiences with cover bands, or other original bands, our guitarist Francesco wanted to start a new project, and recruited other friends to play it (in our small city every musicians knows each others).

Everyone of us enjoyed Francesco’ s ideas and we started to arrange our first autoproduced album “the dark embrace”.
The common passion for Symphony X came out when we had to chose the name of the band, but everyone of us have many influences… Blind Guardian, Nevermore, the Norwegian black metal but also Deftones, Ghost b.c., Broadway Musical etc etc… We like everythings inspires us and the diffrences of our influences made the sound of Walls of Babylon and we are very proud of it, you can love or hate our music, our sound but hardly you can ignore it.

What are your main impulses to write progressive metal music?

The main impulse to write progressive metal? Our passion. Everyone of us was playing other kind of music in his life, but we are here, our biggest project is this band, this family…. We choose Walls of Babylon to make music, to laugh, to cry, to live.

What do you personally consider to be the incisive moments and pieces in your musical work?

The first time we meet to play togheter, the hard work to create our space, our reharsal room, when we won a contest and when we played completely drunken in front of our friends 😉

How would you describe and rate the music scene of the city you are currently living in?

I’ve already said about it, the music scene in our city is formed by musician, friend, that try to come out, and in first place…. try to play.
Fortunately in our small city, this year grew up one live club called “sonic room” and we wish only the best for the people, and friend, that work in it, and we also hope that this can be an opportunity to see and listen a real music scene.

When it comes to be musician, what are your criteria for quality? What are currently your main challenges and ambitions as a musician?

We want to play as better as possible, letting know our music and grow up as musicians…. We already have many ideas for the new studio album and we will fill in it all the new experiences that “a portrait of memories” will bring to us.
About our criteria for quality!? If you are headbanging while you play it, you’ve done it well.

What do you usually start with when working on a new song or lyrics?

Our guitarist Francesco send to us a riff or a complete guitar track…. And then we work on it.the creative process is so natural that I can’t describe in singolar stance…. I can’t ignore that the creative process start from our guitarist Francesco, but I can’t either said that everyone of us does nt have an essential part in it.

Tell us a bit about the selection process for deciding on what to write about, please. What sources will you draw from for research purposes and how much time goes into research, gathering altogether in general?

This one is a quite simple question… Every lyrics depend from my emotion, my state of mind, my loss or gain…. From me when I listen to the “forming track” on the sequencer, I begin to “feel” the song and think about what I want to say…. My lyrics are very personal and in a certain sense, my songs are wath I am, what I really think about myself, about my life and what I see around me, in every sight I cross…. How much time deserve for this process!? Many time a few seconds, many other a few days or week.

As more and more people are producing and releasing music, there has been an exponential growth in promotion agencies. What’s your perspective on the promo system? In how far do you feel it is possibly undermining musical freedom?

I think that the agencies are a chance to let your music flow through the people’s ears… Every band have to play it well to make it possible… It’s a game and you have to play your cards, in every ways it’s all up to you.
You can win and have the possibility to play again and again, album after album…. Or you lose and try to give a faultness for your failure.
We lead our fate thinking day by day, song by song and actually we’ve found a great support from our label and we are enjoyng this path.

Metal scene have changed considerably over the past century. What, do you feel, could – or should – be new forms and formats for music? And, should we save old-school spirit or just go forward together with musical ‘evolution’ (‘degradation’)?

Metal scenes can change, hair can grows or be cutted… But true metal will remain in everyone who listened or played it, in everyone that sell his phone, his playstation to buy a guitar or a drum making noise in a garage. Words still remain words, for those we have politician… Many time we should listen more and think less.

Please recommend two bands to our readers which you feel deserve their attention.

Our friends “Hidden lapse” and “Avelion”.

What are your plans for near future?

Play play play.

Thank you, see you next time!
