Interview WAIT HELL IN PAIN

Hi, WAIT HELL IN PAIN. Greetings from Sick and Destroy team. What are you up to these days?

Hello, everybody! We’re happy and satisfied, our first album has been released few days ago together with our videoclip “Lost in Silence” and we’re receiving a lot of positive feedback 🙂

Would you please introduce your band to our readers who are not aware of your band and music?

We are a so-called “melodic metal” band, trying to reach out from the dense fog of the metal underground. Our goals are to make good music, good live shows and constantly improve our skills. We put together our personal musical experience backgrounds to give something “fresh” to the listener 🙂

Give us a little insight into the formation of the band. When and how did it happen?

The Wait Hell in Pain project was born in 2011 when guitarist Stefano Prejanò and singer Kate Sale met. They both had in mind to start a band and play a mix of Hard Rock and Heavy Metal music. Starting from October 2012 they formed a band and had many gigs in the  area of Rome. After some changes, the final lineup was completed in 2016 and included the actual members: Stefano Rossi (drums), Marco Novello (keyboards), Alfonso Pascarella (bass) and the band’s sound has evolved into a modern and experimental kind of metal.

At what age did you guys start playing instruments? Since when are you into metal music?

Hekate: I started playing guitar at the age of 12, because I loved Iron Maiden and wanted to play metal. After some years I decided to study music  and I left out the guitar in favor of singing.

VonKreutz: I started playing piano at the age of 6, then, when I was 14 I went on to rock music, after hearing Depeche Mode and Deep Purple,  cos I needed to impress girls! 😀

Preja: I started playing classic guitar at the age of 10 because I was jealous of my sister who played it well. After some years I saw electric guitar for the first time and I fell in love, and I started to play metal.

Black:I started playing drums at the age of 14 after hearing Iron Maiden. I used to listen to metal because at home everybody listened to Italian music, and I couldn’t stand it no more!

Maui:I started playing bass at 18 and.. after listening to Cynic, Death and Control Denied I realized that I should have changed instrument 😀

WAIT HELL IN PAIN recently released album “Wrong Desire” via Revalve records. Tell us something about it. Walk us through all the tracks lyrics and meaning.

“Wrong Desire” deals with a very common theme: the violence and abuse against women. The 9 tracks (plus a cover) making up the album, are snapshots that portray the important moments of  a metaphorical journey of May, the fictional protagonist, to its rebirth.  May endured for a long time physical and psychological harassment by a malefigure close to her. May reached the maximum limit of endurance, thinking to kill her tormentor because it seems the only way to save herself and not go crazy, despite the awareness that this extreme action, will not fix the past and will be a journey with no return (THE LAST TRIP).

She thinks “it’s time to say  for you to hear my voice”(GET IT OUT) May only asks to be free, to dissolve her chains, to take off the mask of resignation (BEHIND THE MASK)  move away from the one who caused such humiliation.

This process of rebirth brings obviously disorientation and pain (LOST IN SILENCE). But just when she feels a prisoner in her destiny, May appeals to her strength, and can finally fly away, like an eagle above the clouds of her pain (RAIN OF MAY).

Chains are finally broken. “YOU’RE NEVER GONNA STOP ME” she thinks. Although her body shows the signs of abuse and wounds are bleeding in her soul, May is finally free and strong.(THE CONFESSION) and the NEW MOON, symbol of renewal, shines on her.

How has been the response so far by the listeners? Have you started working on new songs already?

Luckily we are receiving a very good feedback from our listeners and from fanzines and reviewers. A nice thing is that a really good feedback is coming from non-metal listeners, and this is a victory for us. One of our goals was to create metal songs that sound nice for every ear.
We started the songwriting for a new album: it will be a long process as we intend to keep the same quality of “Wrong Desire” and even  improve it.

When and where did you play your first gig? How was the experience of going live for the first time?

The first gig with the current lineup was on May 2016. Maui was the newest member of the band, we were all excited because with him we reached the sound we wished for, we have bonded even more and we improved our skills also in terms of stage presence. It has been a great show 🙂

What, according to you, is the secret behind band’s success?

Playing  music  with heart and passion, with the aim to remain, one day, in the hearts of those who listen. When your music is able to give the same emotions you felt when you created it, it’s a great success.

Ever had an epic fail moment during a gig?

An epic fail happened during our last show:  after the soundcheck someone accidentally disconnected our mac (that contained all Clicks/additional tracks/keyboards  as we were playing without VonKreutz) from the wall charger.
In the middle of our song “Castaway” our drummer Black  looked ad the display, and founds a popup saying “battery 9%”. Luckily the battery lasted t until the end of the song, but Black had to play part of the song with one hand, the other trying to reconnect the laptop, obviously without success…

If asked to differentiate WAIT HELL IN PAIN from other bands in your country, how would you like to respond to it?

There are literally millions of metal bands outside, it’s really difficult to make the difference, i don’t think that’s the point.
It’s all about quality: the difference is made by all the ‘package’ in every face.
Good image, great songs, cool sounds, mix them together, try to not leave anything to chance and to be ‘real’ at the same time. Work hard to improve. Write and play to give emotions, not to feed your ego.

Which bands/ artists do you draw your influences from? Which are your favorite local bands?

Each one of us has different tastes: our drummer loves extreme metal, Maui, the bass player loves prog, VonKreutz is a fan of Rammstein, Ghost and Ayreon  and so on. The very thing that defines us is that everyone brings a bit of  musical background when we create a song, so our music is not inspired by  bands in particular but have multiple influences.

How do you guys manage jobs and gigs? Also how often do you guys gathering altogether just to fun?

We live in a well-known country where ‘music’ and ‘job’ are often seen as opposing directions. All W.h.i.p. members have a ‘normal’ job, and a ‘second life’ in music.
But all of us wanted to get more out of the box than fun, and since the first times we played on stage we have received a good feedback. That encouraged us to keep working hard and to push all to a higher level. Talking about relations inside the band, we are like brothers and we meet for fun at least two or three days a week!

WAIT HELL IN PAIN is very promising formation. Talking of your future, 5 years from now, where do you see yourself?

Well, we are a simple band, we only plan to conquer the world!! Ok, stop joking 😉
5 years is a long time. We’ll grow, make new albums, tell new stories, hope we will be around the world playing our songs… who knows what will happen? We are good friends in music and good friends in life, hope in 5 years we’ll remain the same!

Well, that’s it. Thanks a lot for your time. Speak out to all your fans and supporters.

Thank You!! a massive THANK YOU!!!! Never stop listening to music: music makes this world a better place!!
