Hi! Tell me about Overkhaos. Why did you decide to name the band with such title? What kind of ideas do you explore?
Hi! First of all We want to thank you for this interview.
The name came out a couple of months after we decided to change our very first name “Imperium” into something more representative.
We also wanted a name to recall our origins and, of course, we wanted it to sound cool, so OverKhaos seemed to be the best choice.
According to ancient Greek culture, which is part of our roots, Khaos ( “Chaos” in latin ) was the first thing to ever exist, “an unformed mass, where all the elements were jumbled up together in a shapeless heap”. In the same way we wanted our music to possess all of the elements that are necessary to express our ideas and let a message out of the “shapeless heap” of sound, in the form of heavy metal!
“Beware Of Truth” album was released last month. How does that make you feel? Do you feel you have put album into masses without any wishes to change something now?
We’re as excited as the first day!We put all of Us in this album, it represents our personal point of view about the world and about music.
We made a lot of sacrifices to give life to our debut album , and we’re proud of the work we did so far.
We hope that people will get our message and give us their support to go on working.
Tell me more about “Beware Of Truth”? Album ideas etc…
Beware Of Truth is a concept album. It tells about a near future, where people live exploited by the strong powers that govern the planet.
There are the evil lobbists who decide to obscure the planet to distract the attention from an economic crisis which animates the masses.
They push the government to blame it on a subversive organization, which is the “Khaos Inc.”, whose leader eventually turns to bad after they take over.
There is a main character that finds himself sick because of pollution and joins these rebels for good purposes and there is also a love affair that doesn’t end well. Every song, put in a chronologic sequence, speaks about a different topic and much of the story is reported by the characters themselves.
Anyway we kept the plot very open to various interpretations and every listener is perfectly free to remove each song from the storyline and give a personal meaning to them.
Tell us about Derek Sherinian’ participation.
This collaboration came unexpected. We were wondering on what was the best way to complete the songs with some backing tracks, then we had the opportunity to collaborate with Derek Sherinian. He’s such a great music player and not only for progressive music lovers.
He was searching for interesting bands to produce, so we sent Anna’s song to him. He did the rest adding his personal lines to the song.
That’s it, we worked at a distance. We hope that one day we will meet at a concert and play together.
Where do you take all inspiration from?
Inspirations are everywhere. Our society is enough torbid to guarantee all the inspiration that an artist could desire, that’s where the lyrics and the
music came from. Inspiration also come from emotions, everyday life, a moment of loneliness. Listening to the music is very inspirational and we love different artists, we all have different styles, different attitudes. You never know what’s coming out of the forge and every new song is a surprise.
We think that this last element plays a fundamental role, that is surprise. We always try to surprise and be surprised when making music or just listening.
In your opinion, what is the best way to define Overkhaos’s sound?
This is not an easy question to answer for us, since we never thought about resembling or following any sort of standard.
We wanted something to sound original, powerful, sometimes melodic, sometimes aggressive. Our sound is the result of our passions, our influences and our sense of aesthetics. It’s up to you to give it a definition.
So, are you on hiatus now, just relaxed and looking for album feedbacks, or did you started to compose new stuff immediately?
Basically we didn’t stopped at all! We already started to compose new stuff even before the album was released.
The reason is that we have so much stuff to be developed that we can’t simply relax with all that raw material waiting!
Feedbacks will be a very powerful weapon while composing. They are going to be useful to determine what has been kept by the audience.
We will take advantage of those feedbacks, but we will always keep our very personal vision on the music we write.
What are your main musical influences? How huge is their influence in your sound?
We are all inspired by pretty much different musicians and styles. We obviously get inspired by the big fathers of progressive metal such as Dream theater , Symphony X , Queensrяche , Fates Warning ( just to name some of them ) , but every one has different preferences.
Each one of us listens to different genres, from classical music to death metal. The result of this kind of “melting pot” is the progressive attitude that accompanies our vision of music and our idea of heavy metal. Every influence is a good influence. Some are predominant, some are more discreet, but we are very open minded and try to use as many expressive instruments as possible.
Is there some well-known musician in particular that you would like to use in one of your upcoming albums?
We’re currently very busy thinking about how the sound has to evolve for the making of our future works.
This means that we have absolutely no idea of what’s about to come for what concerns guest appearances. It’s not the priority at the moment, but we will see. There are so many artists out there who would be very interesting to work with.
What is your personal strategy for making your music heard by a larger audience?
Nowadays to be heard by a larger audience can be very easy and difficult at the same time.
Thanks to the internet , you can easily listen to all the music that you want , so it’s pretty easy for a band to be heard by a larger audience.
In the same way this can be tricky , because there are so many bands out there.
Our strategy is to take advantage of the internet. Our first goal for now is to be heard by the greatest possible audience , and thanks to Rockshots , we managed to be heard worldwide.
After we have collected a conspicuous number of feedbacks from the audience , we will plan a new strategy , which will include a small tour for sure.
We strongly believe in live music , so the real goal is to play live for a huge crowd, having an always growing fanbase.
We should consider internet as a launch ramp.
Do you have any other hobby beside music?
Even if we haven’t got so much spare time , yes we all do have hobbies ( almost ).
Giuliano likes vintage cars and he really enjoys going to this kind of fairs ( he’s an Alfa Romeo’s fanatic ),
Anna loves to go listen to every kind of metal gig in the nearby area ( which may be not so much “beside music” ), Andrea produces his own beer, Mimmo drinks beer and Davide is a gym addicted.
Are you all supported by your relatives towards your devotion to music?
Luckily yes! We think that our relatives’ support is maybe the most important thing while making music.
How’s the metal scene in your part of Italy right now? Is it easy to play gigs, to buy records etc there these days?
Unfortunately it’s not good at all. There are a few local festivals and it’s not easy to bring enough people to make music pubs earn enough money to pay the bills and YOU, especially
if we are talking about metal. For this reason we think that the best option might be travelling towards Italy first – as we did so far – and then moving out of our
Thank you for answering my questions, see ya on the road!
Thank you for this nice interview!
