Good day COFFEINNE! How are you guys doing these days?
Not too bad. Today it’s our Brand new videoclip premiere and we’ve got an important gig next saturday, so you can guess we’re “on fire” right now.
First of all, please introduce your band and band members to our readers.
We’re a band founded at the end of 2015, based in Madrid (Spain) by David Villarreal (guitars) and myself, Iñaki Lazcano (vocals). At this moment, Luis Rodríguez (drums) and Miguel Manjon (bass) complete the live line up.
I’d like to know about the formation of the band. How did you guys meet and all. Also, is there any special story behind the band title?
Well… Late 2015 David and myself were asked to join a new Project with some spanish well known musicians. But it was more like a marketing product, I mean, the target was to write one or two songs, record it, make a videoclip and a great show to present the band, just to test people’s feedback. David and me felt that a bit unnatural and forced and we two felt that did not suit into that band project. However we wrote a couple of songs and decided that we wanted to carry on making music together. Our goal was just write songs. No pressure, no timescales… Only when we had a good handfull of tracks we decided to give it a band name and record it. That was the beggining of Coffeinne. The rest of musicians that have worked both on recordings or/and stage and friends of us that come and go depending on availability. Regarding the name… It’s a kind of joke. While recording at the studio we noticed that we are really coffe-addicts, and we made that wordplay between coffee and cocaine… that’s all. We didn’t want a name for the band that could give you clues about style or whatever… we want people to say or decide what kind of music we play.
I expect a long reply for this one. Can you please tell us about the concept and lyrical themes of all your previous releases?
Longer tan previous one???? LOL Lyrics… I always try to write being not much explicit, I mean, all the songs talk about specific events or situations, but I don’t want to give many details and I prefer to use metaphors, talk about moods or feelings…
This way I feel that I don’t constrain the story and I give the listeners the chance to fit the lyrics into their own experiences. My lyrics are often drammatic, sad on dark. Not much happiness or joy within them. One theme can talk about rage, another desperation, about how difficult life is nowadays, about traumatic experiences lived…
Is there any special reason for choosing your music conception?
Just likes. David and myself have very similar influences, so it’s very easy to write together. No style constraint among all styles we like and we use to listen to. Heavy metal, power metal, Hard rock, melodic dath metal, metalcore… nothing is planned, we just let it flow.
How do you guys manage to create music at all? What challenges do you face while writing and recording an album?
It’s simple. The only requirement is that we like it. We try to create music that we would consume.
Your latest album ‘Circle of Time’ was released last month via Fighter records. How was the experience working on the studio? Any funny or even sad happenings during the studio work?
Well, at the moment it’s the last and the first… LOL. Fortunately, Sergio (2nd guitar, engineer and producer for the record) was a very good friend of David, so the process was extremely easy. The first time he used his magic with the songs at the studio we absolutely fell in love with it… keys, arranges, production… it was much more tan what we expected. We definitely will work together again for the next record. No doubt about it.
You guys are still underground/underrated, although your music has been appreciated by the critics worldwide. What, according to you, is the reason behind it?
First of all, we are a new band… it’s about half a year since first release of Circle of time (spanish release), and international release was less than one month ago. We are still newborn… On the other hand, we come from Spain, that’s always a handicap. We hope with time and patience people will get to know us and like our music. Step by step.
Can you throw some light on your past as musicians?
I’m former Airless singer with 5 CDs released during 15 years, some of them with special releases in Japan and edited worldwide, and David played with several bands here in Spain, the most renamed one called Black Rock.
Tell us about your favorite bands, from whom you gain inspiration. Are you having any favorite artist/band that has emerged from metal/rock soil?
Very difficult answer… they can vary from Harem Scarem to Children of bodom, whitesnake to In flames or Def Leppard to Arch Enemy… Not favourite, but i.e. I discovered last year killer bands such as Westfield Massacre or Oracles that I definitely love.
How is the metal scene going in your country?
It can’t be compared to Central Europe, Scandinavia or USA… we’re light years back. But there are some bands emerging and getting some recognition worldwide. You have Lords of Black, for example, that will play this summer at Prog Power USA. So we don’t like to complain. We just have to work harder.
Tell us, if you have played abroad.
As I told you, we are a newborn band so we haven’t had the chance yet. Hopefully soon…
Are you working on any music videos, might it be videoclip or lyric video?
This is our Brand new video. I hope you enjoy it.
Rapid fire section. Just for fun. So just chill, and just type the first thought that comes to your mind when you hear:
* Circles – Circle of time… :)
* Dream Theater – IMAGES AND WORDS, one of my greatest influences ever.
* Jerez – motorbike races
* Hammet – Kirk….?
* Jack – Jack of diamonds (Sonic Syndicate)… I’m not a great fan of whiskey
Thanks a lot for your time! It’s really nice to know more about you. Would you like to say anything to your fans and our readers?
Just Thank you sooooo much for the support. We truly appreciate the great feedback we are having.
