Hi! Tell me about Evoke Thy Lords. Why did you decide to name the band with such title? What kind of ideas do you explore?
Hello! The name of the band had occurred as a reference to H.P. Lovecraft works, later changed a range of its notions, and by now it does not have a clear definition. The one who had made it up, and everyone seeing it now – they all have their own perception of its meaning. Everyone has his own gods, and the music has always been a channel to communicate with them.
“Lifestories” album was released on April. How does that make you feel? Do you feel you have put album into masses without any wishes to change something now?
It’s like a weight off our mind. For us album recording is a very hard process so let’s the done things stay done. Changes are for future stuff.
Tell me more about “Lifestories”? Album ideas etc…
If you’re asking about lyrics, “Lifestories” about themes like life as a trick and about sometimes people are not what they seem to be. One song is about dissociative or psychogenic fugue, psychiatric disorder when the person loses his previous memories and individuality, leaves his family and often moves to the other place and thinks that he is new, another person. Usual stories of usual lives, as you can see.
Where do you take all inspiration from?
Lyrical themes are inspirated mainly with the ideas coming from different sources such as books, movies and some talks. It’s all lies over our own vision of the world. Riffs are the result of rehearsals, jams and insights in the wrong places and wrong times.
In your opinion, what is the best way to define Evoke Thy Lords’ sound?
Deep and hypnotic? We believe so.
So, are you on hiatus now, just relaxed and looking for album feedbacks, or did you started to compose new stuff immediately?
Now we think about future conceptions. And we create new riffs and parts too.
What are your main musical influences? How huge is their influence in your sound?
The time passes and it’s more and more difficult to answer such questions. Everything is too complicated and it’s difficult to mark out some certain influences. Perhaps, they exist, perhaps, they are significant, but inside we hardly can sort it out.
Is there some well-known musician in particular that you would like to use in one of your upcoming albums?
There are many great musicians and great bands whose music we like. But engaging session musicians takes place not because of technical needs but because of his/her name, it’s like football with legioners. What’s the sense? It’s so if you talk about music. If you talk about show business and marketing tricks – well, you can do what you want there, of course.
What is your personal strategy for making your music heard by a larger audience?
It’s not our main goal, so we don’t have any special strategy. We just try to do our best in music.
Do you have any other hobby beside music?
You need to interrogate every member of the band in particular. And it’s a long time. So, it’s easier to answer no.
Are you all supported by your relatives towards your devotion to music?
We don’t think so. Rather, for them it’s like an inevitable evil.
How’s the metal scene in Russia right now? Is it easy to play gigs, to buy records etc there these days?
Need to understand the specific of geography in Russia. We’re not able to speak for Moscow, St.Petersburg and European part. Situation in Siberia is very different from town to town, so we speak for our city only. In Novosibirsk more than 1,5 millions of people live, it’s third big city in Russia. And the number of places where you can play heavy music is zero. It’s not a joke. There are many good bands here and all of them playing live in some garages where sometimes is alowed to make concerts and they are regularly being closed.
Thank you for answering my questions, see ya on the road!
Thanks for your interest.
