Interview MISTEYES

Hi, MISTEYES. Greetings from Sick and Destroy team. What are you up to these days?

Hi! Thank you very much for this interview! Everything is great for the band in these times! We are going on with the promotion for our first album “Creeping Time” (released in 2016 for the Canadian label Maple Metal Records).
Only some weeks ago, we announced that the title-track of the album will be featured as part of the soundtrack of the thriller “The Darkest Nothing – Paraphrenia” of the German director Filip Halo. Moreover, the same director came here to Italy to direct our first official videoclip! We are really excited to have the first clip directed by a professional horror movie director, we’ll release it in the next months.

Would you please introduce your band to our readers who are not aware of your band and music?

Sure, we are a metal band from Italy. We have a seven-member line-up, that includes Ainwen (clean and opera vocalist), Irmin (growl/scream vocalist), Insanus and Xander (guitar players), Hyde (keyboard player), Hephaestus (bassist) and Dreki (drummer). We define our style as “Light and Dark Metal”, as it’s based on opposites: female vocals and harsh vocals, acoustic and soft interludes and death/black metal riffs, melodic/symphonic influences and horror, dark and gloomy atmospheres and so on.

Give us a little insight into the formation of the band. When and how did it happen?

Well, the band was formed in 2012 by our guitarist Insanus and our ex-guitarist Decadence, who met at a Korn show and decided to play together. However, the idea at the beginning was quite different and the band had a more melodic death/black sound. Only in 2014, when Ainwen (female vocalist) and Hyde (keyboard player) joined the band, the project started the evolution to the actual Misteyes sound.

MISTEYES released Creeping Time album on April 8th. Tell us something about it. Walk us through all the tracks lyrics and meaning.

Sure, “Creeping Time” was our first full-length album. At the beginning, we wanted to produce a EP, but we came up with more songs than we expected and with a solid sound, so we felt they all worked well together and we decided not to divide them into two EPs. This was surely a challenge, but we are really satisfied with the result, we think this was the best way to present our band. Musically it perfectly represents our style, that we define as “Light and Dark Metal”. Through the songs, in fact, you can find many “light” moments, like acoustic or piano interludes, melodic and catchy refrains and the female vocals of Ainwen; but also “dark” elements, like black and death guitar riffs, double-bass drum parts, horror and decadent melodies and, obviously, the harsh vocals by Irmin. Talking about the single tracks, “The Last Knell” (the intro) is strictly connected with the following, the title-track “Creeping Time”, which is the last song we composed for the album and one with which we are more satisfied. “Creeping Time” talks about the passing of time and how we face our mortality every day.

The themes of time and death are the common thread of all the album, especially in songs like “Lady Loneliness”, “The Prey” (where the death always looking for us is presented like a hunt, in which we are the preys), “Destroy Your Past” and “The Demon Of Fear” (both watching the theme of time from the point of view of the mistakes or the errors that we do during our lives and how we can go on with these burdens) and “Decapitated Rose” (which talks about a girl that only cultivates her appearance, that getting old and so losing her beauty, discovers to have nothing and too late regrets of the life she had). “Winter’s Judgment” also talks about the theme of time, connected also with the circle of life and re-birth, in fact (unlike the other tracks) it has a positive interpretation: even after the worst Winter, Spring will always come. And it was not a case that this was the last song of the tracklist, leaving an open ending and, also, with the meaning that even if it’s the end of the album, we’ll be back with new music, learning from our errors. Even if we arrived at the Winter time with this last track, this is the end only of one circle, but another one is going to start soon with a new Spring and new music.

How has been the response so far by the listeners? Have you started working on new songs already?

The response was really great, from both critics and fans! We received really many more reviews than we expected and all of them are positive or very positive ones. We are really grateful of the interest on it! However, yes, after some month when we had some live shows and fests to support the new release and a line-up change, at the beginning of the year we started rehearsing new music and now we have two completely new tracks done, but we still don’t know if they will be part of an EP or of a new full-length. The sound is a direct evolution of the past songs: more modern and in some parts more progressive and with an emphasis of our “Light and Dark” sound: the extreme parts will be even heavier and soft parts will be more melodic and catchy.

When and where did you play your first gig? How was the experience of going live for the first time?

Our first gig was back in 2013 in our hometown Turin in Italy! It was a festival with many other underground bands from our city. For the members that were in the line-up at that time, that was for everyone the very first live show and this was very special! That day we received the first appreciations on our music from people out from the band and our friends and this stared helping us in believing more in ourselves.

What, according to you, is the secret behind band’s success?

It’s very difficult to answer to this question. What we can say is that we saw that’s very different from the past.
Obviously making good music is always the first and most important thing, but nowadays it’s not enough. There are hundreds of bands and you have to manage to be noted among them. To do it, you have to surprise the audience not only in the music field, but also the image of the band is very important, how you use socials and interact with fans, scenic impact during the live shows, the quality of other staff like photos or videos and so on. There’s not a unique recipe for success for sure and the difficulty, we think, is to find your own path and to have the strength and perseverance to follow it.

Ever had an epic fail moment during a gig?

We surely had better shows than others and sometimes some technical problems, but fortunately we never had a real fail during a show!

If asked to differentiate MISTEYES from other bands in your country, how would you like to respond to it?

In Italy there are a lot of really great bands, but we think we are different in one point. Here there are a lot of extreme bands, like death, black and also brutal or thrash metal bands and also a lot of softer ones in melodic, symphonic or power metal fields. What is very rare (and what we are trying to do) is to mix these two worlds. And not being an extreme metal band adding some melodies or symphonies or, on the contrary, being a melodic metal band and adding some growl vocals, but to make music where these two worlds are equal in importance.

The band has seen not too many line-up changes since the formation of the band. Is it because, everyone in the band is doing his job perfectly? How compatible are band members with each other?

After some changing at the very beginning, we had a very stable line-up for years. This gave us the possibility to fully concentrate on producing the best first album we possibly could. However, after some months from its release, one of the two guitarists and the drummer decided to leave the band. The release of the first album is an important step for a band and the great response it had pushed us to try to bring the band to a higher level. Unfortunately, those two members weren’t ready for this changing, because they had other priorities in their personal lives. But at the beginning of the Summer, we found two perfect new members who share with us a great passion for the music and the band and that are giving new life to the project, also starting composing new songs together, as we already said.

Which bands/artists do you draw your influences from? Which are your favorite local bands?

We try to incorporate many influences in our music and also having a seven-member line-up helped us having many fonts of inspiration from each member. Surely, many extreme metal bands influenced us since the beginning, like Dimmu Borgir, Cradle Of Filth, Fleshgod Apocalypse, Death, Dark Tranquillity, Septicflesh, etc… but then, also more melodic and gothic bands started influencing us like After Forever, Epica and Kamelot. Another important sort of inspiration for us are the decadent and doom atmospheres of bands like Draconian, Paradise Lost and November Dooms. In the most recent material we are also adding more modernity and groove to our sound from bands like Born Of Osiris or Lamb Of God; this can be only little heard on our debut “Creeping Time”, but it’ll be more evident on the new releases. Talking about the local bands, the underground scene in Turin is big, with really many great bands and musicians! We don’t mention anyone of them, only because we don’t want to forget anyone!

How do you guys manage jobs and gigs? Also how often do you guys gathering altogether just to fun?

As, obviously, we can’t live just with our music, it’s not always easy to manage the band works with our jobs, but fortunately every band member has a strong passion for the band and we do the possible and the impossible to give to the band all the time and attention needed, including gigs. Apart being band mates, we are all also close friends and we meet very often even if not all of us live near the others.

MISTEYES is very promising formation. Talking of your future, 5 years from now, where do you see yourself?

Well, thisis a hard question. As we said, we’re already working on some new material of which we are really satisfied.
So, in the next years the main aim is to release it in the best way possible and, surely, the hope is to have more and greater shows too. We are also working hard on completely revamping our visual impact of the band, all connected with the new concept of the new songs. So, surely within the next years we’ll also complete this process and we’ll show it to our fans.

Well, that’s it. Thanks a lot for your time. Speak out to all your fans and supporters.
