Interview Mourning Dawn

Give a brief history of Mourning Dawn, music style, and the members.

Hello. We are a French doom/black metal band coming from France. The band started as one man band back in 2005 in the south of France, then I moved to Paris where the band grew up as a 4 pieces. The band is consisting of me Laurent (also member and ex member of Inborn Suffering, Funeralium and Wastes) voc/guit, Vincent on bass (Heol Telwen, Bran Barr, ex Funeralium), Nico on drums, and Fred on lead guitars (Ataraxie, Funeralium).

Give in more detail, some information about your coming EP Waste?

It’s a whole concept. After a drunken night, I wanted to create something never done in the metal genre (Im not including Neurosis as strictly metal). So I decided to compose two songs that when which overlaid onto each other, create a full new track. It was quite tricky to make, but Im quite satisfied with the result, especially if you consider how hard is it to compose a 25min long song… So imagine two songs, that have to stay interesting during the whole length, and they might emphasizes each other when played at the same time… While keeping our style : slow, bleak and depressive. Lyrically its all about life, as usual in the metal genre, about what we have done in the past, and what we will do in the future, with the link in between. Hence the name: Waste.

Mourning Dawn has signed with Aesthetic Death records, tell more about that?

Stu is a long time fan and friend. He released our second album as an LP and we were really happy with the results. When I had this Ep done, I really wanted him to release it because I sensed he would be the only one that could understand its complexity. No money involved, just passion, and the will to release something ambitious and dark.

What is the difference between your latest and the very first records?

No surprises: I improved myself as a musician, and life taught me a lot. I guess the youth and spontaneity of my first, bad, records switched to something more “mature” – that’s what people say – I don’t really care about that. The depressive feeling is still there because that’s the core of this band. Being surrounded by great musicians helps a lot by the way. Sometimes I miss the old time where recording with a cheap guitar on a broken cab was cool. Now its all about production stuff, gear stuff etc etc, but at each release you want to do something better, get a heavier sound etc, so you have to improve yourself on that point. But I might start a super raw project soon hehe

What inspires Mourning Dawn music and lyric writing? What does Mourning Dawn lyrics talk about?

Loss mostly. Not only people-related. The loss of innocence, the loss of your hopes, your dreams. Everything. Sometimes I feel like life is a perpetual mourn. I work in the medical field, and this is what I see. Im not a pessimistic person, but everything we have has its own end, and we have to deal with it. I wrote a lot about that sacrificed youth during the first world war, because I thought it was pretty symbolic of a generation that have been totally broken in the name of something we didn’t control anyway. For the rest, I read a lot, especially the beatnicks generation or 30’s french writers like Drieu la Rochelle. Kinda dark and bleak reading for people sick about fake digital happiness.

Do you play live often? Do you like abroad gigs?

No. Im cautious with our gigs offers because I don’t want to destroy my throat too often ahah ! More seriously, we played in Europe a lot for an Ug band, and mostly abroad, seems like France doesn’t like us. We have a tour in Asia scheduled in September, and probably in Europe next year. But we are suffering of our style : too slow for a black metal line up, and too “harsch” for a doom gig he he…

How often does the band practice and work on new material?

I moved back to the south 4 years ago, but the band stayed in Paris, so Im moving once a month to Paris to rehearse. That means working from a distance and great musicianship. That’s why it required to play with the right people. It works pretty well since everyone is working on all their own. Im composing everything over here, then I send them stuff and we arrange everything when we rehearse together.

How did the band come up with the name Mourning Dawn and tell what does it means for you?

It came from a depressed time when I was 18. Those who had to go through this know what Im talking about. Anxiousness, sleeping troubles, and the utter pain you feel in the morning, when you realize the world is real and your pain too. I hated the dawn then, worst moment of the day, hence the name.

What does the band plan on doing in near time?

We are practicing to introduce our new guitar player, Fred, from Ataraxie, and to prepare our tour in China. On the release plan, we have to promote the release of this ep, finish to record our 4th album, and release a split cd that will be out this year as well. Meanwhile, I started a new project called WASTES with some friends in the European doom scene which its first album will be out this spring on code666. Lotsa work as you might see…
