One-girl old-school metal band from Ecuador!
Hi! Tell me about Acid Evil. Why did you decide to name the band with such title? What kind of ideas do you explore?
Hi there. Thanks for this interview, I was exploring different ideas but certainly I did not t want that me and my project will be associated with things that entertain and mislead people. So
I decided that the name for the project not necessarily will explain something, honestly I wanted something that I could give shape and meaning as time goes.
“Acid Demons” split album was released 5 years ago. Do you preparing something new now?
Yes I do, in fact I have several new songs, some of them have been played in concerts, and this songs are part of Release the Chaos which is not recorded already.
Couple of weeks ago I meet a drummer who is helping me setting up the songs, creating interesting mix of sounds that give a different atmosphere to the songs, every rehearsal is a big step. If everything works I will be able to record it and release something it this year.
What is the reason you do not have full-length album still? Lack of time, musicians etc?
I don’t have stable musicians that is the main reason and this makes difficult maintain the structure in this project because with a new musician is a new beginning of the same thing again and again, this is exhausting and frustrating, time is also another reason because for job the last year I moved to live out Quito and I was forced to stop for a while and from the distance is very difficult to continue.
I have to deal with these things because Acid Evil was not created in order to be a band.
Where do you take all inspiration from? And tell us deeply, what are you sung about?
My inspirations comes from the macro existence, energy and nature, I mean from the manifestation of the universe, human behavior, mantras, mudras, cosmos, etc.
I named the first Acid Evil release Black Space because at that time and until now there are things difficult to understand and one questions brings another more, as a result knowledge is never complete, my perception about the universe at that time was like the beginning of everything a huge black mass, the lyrics talk about my personal experiences and personal believes about symbolism, ancient civilizations, feelings and emotional situations.
In the Release the Chaos project I am more focused in energies, here the titles of the songs: Multidimensional Past, Magnetismo, Predators, Black Speed Demons, Beyond the Cosmos, Invocation under the stars, The Ascending of the Nighthawk and a Music to the Spheres has the same ideas in terms of inspiration.
In your opinion, what is the best way to define Acid Evil’s sound?
It is difficult to define in words the Acid Evil sound, because every song has its own personality and ideology, these songs were created during different moods caused by different experiences. The magic happend every time that I play a riffs, I experience chaotic regressions that make me remember those feelings but in simple words the sound of Acid Evil conteins speed riffs, sincronized drums and a rought voice. The new album has melodic parts that combine well with the technique on drums.
Have you ever thought about playing live?
I did it, three times, two of them a complete disaster because the lack of personality of my band members and the promoters. I had the opportunity to play for first time in Quito with three local bands and two more from Colombia and Peru, it was a real metal concert experience.
What are your main musical influences? How huge is their influence in your sound?
In terms of music my influences comes from bands like Destruction,Sepultura, Sodom, S.D.I because they represent speed, wildness, fury and art. The vocals of Bestial Holocaust from Bolivia is big influence and from there my interest in creating something by my own.
Other bands like Dissection, Rotting Christ, Desaster, Nocturnal. Solo projects like Bathory, Burzum, Inquisition.
The influence is huge definitly but more than influence I find inspiration.
Is there some well-known musician in particular that you would like to use in one of your upcoming albums?
Yes, I admire Dagon and all the magic that he represents.
What is your personal strategy for making your music heard by a larger audience?
I don’t have any strategy, I do not want to do this, people is very honest and critic about music by and If they want to know more about my project they find me and ask, like you also I don’t use social networks in order to live according to my thoughs.
Do you have any other hobby beside music?
Yes I do, I am birder. So I order to find more species for my list I had the oportunity to visit pristine areas in the country. Ecuador is a very rich country in biodiversity and culture. This is an invitation for you and for all the people to come and visit us.
Are you supported by your relatives towards your devotion to music?
Yes they support me. This was not a problem before or now because my family is not related to strong religious beliefs or another type or radical ideas.
You are a girl, how it’s to be metalgirl there in your country?
Now it is very normal because women are better understood and we worked to get our own space in the metal scene, but in the eighties was very difficult because of the foreign influence women and rock concerts were directly linked to drugs and sex for events that happened in the sixties, woodstock for example, so try to change that concept in a macho and catholic society full of prejudices was a challenge.
I can not speak for other women but in my personal experience, I have not had any inconvenience that has not allowed me to develop into normal life for the simple fact of being a metalgirl. But there is always some drunken idiot in the audience pretending to be macho.
How’s the metal scene in Ecuador right now? Is it easy to play gigs, to buy records etc there these days?
There are many popular bands in the scene, there are also underground bands that remain in the circle and market their music between them. There are some very dedicated local producers as Chivo Negro Productions working with local bands and other countries as well, Buerbero Records who are focused on producing only local bands in tape format and collection issues, this type of material is easy to get. In the other hand we have the music stores you can find everything but with inflated prices, this is due to import taxes that double the real price. However we buy it.
Small concerts in the city are difficult to arrange because there are no suitable sites for it and get the permits is complicated, that is why the organizers are doing concerts in small towns outside Quito.
Concerts for large audiences are more expensive because the rented places are stadiums and convention centers bands like Kiss, Metallica, Megadeth, Iron Maiden, etc, played in the city.
Thank you for answering my questions, see ya on the road!
Thanks for invite me to participate in your magazine. Magnetismo, es lo universal lo que da valor a lo individual.
Greetings from the Middle of the World.
