Interview Cardinals Folly

cardinalfolly (Копіювати)

Cardinals Folly is Finnish doom metal band, since I listen to their music since their very start, I just couldn’t miss an opportunity to speak with Mikko (bass/vocals)! Enjoy!

Hi! Tell me about Cardinals Folly. Why did you decide to name the band with such title? What kind of ideas do you explore?

The name was originally found from Dennis Wheatley´s black magic novel, and the british ´70s occultism, classic horror films and old pulp literature being my major points of interest, it was a good way to sum us up. Wheatley´s popularity also significantly degraded due to his jingoism and sadism, which got kinda outdated in the world we´re now living in. But that only made him more interesting in my eyes.

“Holocaust of Ecstasy & Freedom” album was released couple months ago. How does that makes you feel? Do you feel you have put album into masses without any wishes to change something now?

Pretty much, yeah. We´re satisfied with the album. It´s definitely the best so far, and a really compact trip through the mirky woods. Theme-wise, all the important aspects are there, and nothing drags too much or is overblown. I´m really happy with the album.

Tell me more about “Holocaust of Ecstasy & Freedom”? Album ideas etc…

At first it was meant to be an EP. With 5 songs we recorded at the first session. Then our label told us they weren´t interested in anything but an actual full-length, so we returned to record 4 songs more, of which 2 were added to make this an album, and the other 2 are on the split CD we´re just putting out. The songwriting of the time was so consistent, I don´t think you can really even hear this. The song themes stick well together, from the Lovecraftian “Her Twins of Evil” all the way through the horror-film inspired tracks, such as “Psychomania” and “La Papesse”. It´s a deranged trip through intoxicated realms, occultism, sex and eerie rituals. If you´re too tight-assed, stay away. Things are about the get weird!

You have also released split album with Church of Void and Acolytes of Moros… Who thing out this an idea and do you know these bands members personally?

They were originally meant to put it out as a normal 2-band split between Void and Acolytes. We jumped in when the opportunity rose (cause we had those 2 tracks we could use), I think it was some drunken discussion between me and someone from Church of Void, probably Magus. We know the Church of Void guys personally, they know the Acolytes. The split CD will be out via American Line Prods, August 31. We have 3 gigs coming with them before the year is out, 2 in Finland and one in Sweden. Gonna be a feast!

Well, you are signed with Shadow Kingdom Records since your very start. Seems like you are completely satisfied with their work. Do they really covering all band needs?

Not really, because it´s an American label. Our distribution in Finland is non-existent, and the local media doesn´t support us at all. It´s basically one or two magazines in Finland, that take note of our work. Shadow Kingdom is doing what they can, and they´ve put out shitload of good old metal. It´s an honest label.

Where do you take all inspiration from?

Good old metal bands, Sick/weird movies, Occult/pulp literature, Our hate towards religions, Horror, Weird adventures, Pagan traditions, Excess drinking, Madness in general…

In your opinion, what is the best way to define Cardinals Folly’s sound?

Bunch of deranged mentally 18-year old metal fans creating an odd, strangely attractive & morbid yet an energetic classic metal explosion. Motörhead of Doom Metal?

So, are you on hiatus now, just relaxed and looking for album feedbacks, or did you started to compose new stuff immediately?

We just demoed the 4th album yesterday! Heh. It took some time to get “Holocaust” out, and we´re always jamming. So we made another 8 killer tracks in the meantime. And Jesus, do they rule! We´ve definitely turned the gears up again. The next album blows the previous ones to pieces, and it´s pretty easy for me to say that. And we also have a handful of gigs coming for the remainder of the year. Finland, Lithuania and Sweden for now. Things are busier than ever before in the Folly den, but that´s only good. Time to bring true shit to the people.

What are your main musical influences? How huge is their influence in your sound?

Classic metal gods like BLACK SABBATH, BATHORY, PENTAGRAM, ANGEL WITCH, IRON MAIDEN, CATHEDRAL, VENOM, MOTÖRHEAD, BURZUM, REVEREND BIZARRE… no surprise, right? The influences are there, but we have created our own sermons through our own twisted playing style, non-musical influences & atmosphere.

Is there some well-known musician in particular that you would like to use in one of your upcoming albums?

I´m not against that idea, but I´m not really interested either. Cardinals Folly is a cult of it´s own, I don´t really see how we would need to feature people in our songs. We´re true music fans, you know. Not about the trends or being “cool”. It would be laughable to think that someone can improve us simply because he´s popular. There are lots of popular metal musicians, who have stagnated and become lazy. Their stuff sounds like a middle-age-crisis. The passion is gone. We still have it, so…. who do we need?

What is your personal strategy for making your music heard by a larger audience?

We need to play more gigs internationally, and get a better distribution in Scandinavia. And above all, keep upping our own ante. Stay true and hungry.

Do you have any other hobby beside music?

They´re all pretty much found from our lyrics, if you can read in between the lines… hahah!

Are you all supported by your relatives towards your devotion to music?

Not really. I think most of them are just wondering like, whatta hell is going on in there. Our drummer´s mother offered us her company van for our Lithuanian gig trip, that was friendly. My aunt thinks I´m the reincarnation of Aleister Crowley, or something. I´m not saying she´s wrong, I just think she has a bad taste for not appreciating that. “Their poor taste in gods / Won´t let them see / This Holocaust of Ecstasy!”.

How’s the metal scene in Helsinki right now? Is it easy to play gigs, to buy records etc there these days? Also what about daily life – is there dangerous state of muslims migrants or Finland doing all the best to avoid growing of their amount etc? What is your personal point of view on this topic?

I think it´s better than most capitals around the world. At least Finland is full of metal bands, and almost everybody understands the name of the game somehow. There´s an overabundance of bands and gigs. Also some very good record stores. Of course Finland is small and far away from UK & the US, but it´s also more honest and the scene is more visible outside at the streets. Like in the US for an example, there are of course lots of metalheads, but you really can´t see anything going on, unless you know the circles. About the immigrants, yeah, my personal opinion is that we´re shooting ourselves on the foot pretty bad, but the majority of our people ain´t gonna get that until shit has really hit the fan. The world is pretty cold and doomed place nowadays anyway – so enjoy the ride. People are turning into inhumane zombies, everything is about the corporate faggotry, fucking babylon enslaving us, countryside is turning into a graveyard, cities are full of sins, ignorant wiseasses and shattered emotions. All we can do is put our rage in music.

Thank you for answering my questions, see ya on the road!

Thanks for your intelligent questions, it was a pleasure. Don´t be scared, live to win, although they´re always gonna tell ya it´s a sin! METAL!
