Interview Eurynomos

Dark and ols-school heavy metal bomb from Germany, welcome – Eurynomos!

Hi! Tell me about Eurynomos. Why did you decide to name the band with such title? What kind of ideas do you explore?

EURYNOMOS is a name from the ancient Greek mythology and at the same time, it is an old song by HELLHAMMER which is a great link to the sound and style that we are connected to. It shows that we are inspired by the first generation of extreme Metal.
We knew that it isn’t an easy name and will surely be mixed up by some people, but this didn’t stop us from choosing EURYNOMOS as our bandname.

“Fierce Alliance” EP was released couple months ago. How does that make you feel? Do you feel you have put album into masses without any wishes to change/to add something now?

We are happy that we managed to release the third EP from the trilogy, cause the third EP was the most difficult one since we had to find good sounding way to let the EP end with the intro of the 1st EP again, to complete the circle.
To write three songs with a playing time of 13 minutes and let it all end with the intro again was a big challenge. First we jammed a different song for the 7“EP, but it turned out to be too long, so we said we save that song for a future release. Therefore, we did a different and shorter new song for side A, and it left an open spot of 2 minutes of playing time on Side A which means I had to come up with riffs and song structures for another song that won’t be longer than that… and this lead to „Spell of Necromancy“ which is a super straight ahead speed song. It is not easy to write songs with a playing time limit, but fortunately it worked out ok. The music of „Ferropolis (City of Iron)“ was an old idea from around 2009, at least the first part until the break, and this song was chosen for Side B because it connected well to the outro (Closing Vault). So, looking back at the third EP, it was the best we can do for this release. There are always things you would change afterwards, that’s natural. You Iive and learn.

Tell me more about “Fierce Alliance”? EP idea etc…

You mean the third 7“EP of the trilogy? It’s in the same concept as the first two Eps… three tracks, with a playing time of 13 minutes, like all the other Eps. I think nobody did something like this before. On this 7“EP the new drummer „VESUV“ can be heard for the first time, so the sound and style is a bit different compared to the first two Eps, he plays a bit more furious and different style than old drummer NIMETON who came from a more classic style of drumming. A good drummer as well, he had his own qualities.

Since you have just three EP records, when may we expect for a full-length album from Eurynomos? Will it be released in conspiracy with Iron Pegasus Records again?

If you combine the three Eps it is like an album, but we have planned to do a real album, yes. We will start working on new and also old unused songs soon. There are quite some songs and riffs in the vault that I have prepared many years ago before the band came together and we wanna do some new tracks at the same time. So let’s see how things develope. IRON PEGASUS will forge this piece of iron again.

Where do you take all inspiration from?

Musically it is the pioneer bands of the extreme Metal genre and also classic Heavy Metal bands. Lyric wise, it’s sometimes historical subjects („Eye of the Pantheon“, „Banshee Calling“), or fictional stories („Invisible Rays“) or just stuff that can happen in everyone’s life („Witchryder“), etc.

In your opinion, what is the best way to define Eurynomos’s sound?

Traditional, classic, heavy, mean, powerful and dark Metal mayhem with an authentic sound and style.

What are your main musical influences? How huge is their influence in your sound?

We don’t like to mention bands that influence us, people should listen with their own ears and make their own opinion. All I can say it is the classic pioneer bands that inspire us, when Metal was fresh and the adrenalin was flowing. Every band is influenced by other bands in one way or another, and so are we. But when I create the riffs, I don’t want to steal music, I just try to get into a special mood and try to capture that spirit and channel it into something creative and hopefully catchy and good. Most song riffs are created at home, but we always discuss them as a team and make the best of them. Some songs were also created together during rehearsal sessions, from jamming, like „Invisible Rays“ and „Gone Down in Flames“, a recorded but still unreleased tune. This stuff comes straight from spontaneous playing.

Is there some well-known musician in particular that you would like to use in one of your upcoming albums?

No, not for me. I don’t know what the other guys think about this, but since we never discussed it, I guess there is no need to use any well-known musician for a future recording.

Okkulto – doesn’t he miss the days with Desaster?

Okkulto’s departure from DESASTER is 15 years (!) ago now. I might be wrong but I don’t think he misses the days with his old band. I mean, he left them, he was not fired, it was his choice. He had a great time with the band. Now he roars for EURYNOMOS and I think it is strong enough that there is no reason for him to look back to his past band. And we get along well inside the band and we have the same vision.

What is your personal strategy for making your music heard by a larger audience?

There is no strategy. If the releases get appreciated by Metalheads, then we are happy. We wanna be heard by everyone who understands what the music is all about.

Do you have any other hobby beside music?

Okkulto has several hobbies, he is quite active in his spare time, always doing outdoor activities. Magma is a true creature of the night at weekends, Vesuv is busy with musical stuff and I Iike to do creative stuff like working on old furnitures, reading history, drawing bandstuff, etc, if I find the time to do it.

What does your pseudonyms means?

Okkulto is the old name he has since more than 20 or even 25 years, he is the occult character of the band. Magma is a volcanic stream of bass-power, Vesuv is the volcano that strikes like a detonation and Aethon is a winged fiery horse that pulls the chariot.

Are you all supported by your relatives towards your devotion to music?

I don’t know if all parents even know what we are doing. my parents know that I play guitar in a band, but they don’t really say anything about it. I am not a teenager anymore, so… hehe.

How’s the metal scene in Germany right now? Is it easy to play gigs, to buy records etc there these days?

German Metal scene is really big. Tons of gigs, labels and lots of good new and also old bands. I think the scene is quite healthy these days. Not everything is great and maybe there is too much of everything, but there are some fine bands out there that deserve recognition.

Thank you for answering my questions, see ya on the road!

Hails to you Lukasz and cheers for your support, we appreciate it. To all the legions of Metalheads who still love a traditional raw, dark and heavy style with an authentic sound, check out EURYNOMOS. www.eurynomos.com
