Interview ZARPA

zarpa

Zarpa – Spanish heavy metal act since far ’70s, I wont speak too much, so just let’s read an interview!

Hi! Tell me about ZARPA and ‘70s, when you have just started the band! Why did you decide to name the band with such title? What kind of ideas do you explore?

In the late 70 more precisely in 1977 in Spain had few bands of Rock and Heavy Metal music… We were Chosen for This Kind of music without knowing why. Some feeling of rebellion, the desire to change the situation of young people of our country, all made us to create a heavy metal band. A hard music for fight against an ancient world. in those days we had 15 and 16 years old.

“Dispuestos para atacar” album was released couple weeks ago. How does that make you feel? Do you feel you have put album into masses without any wished to change something now?

We are very Satisfied with the result, there is nothing to add at this new work.

Tell me more about “Dispuestos para atacar”? Album ideas etc…

I’ve been writing for a year 35 songs, these songs have had a very hard selection by our record label “Pure Steel Records”, they have chosen the best at their criterion. There is a lot of work, a lot of energy and time invested.

Where do you take all inspiration from?

The inspiration comes from what I live day to day. It is not a matter of aesthetics, it is a matter of feelings. I am very proud about my Compositions and everything I do has to amaze me.

In your opinion, what is the best way to define ZARPA’s nowadays sound? In addition, in your opinion, how it’s differ from your early young days?

ZARPA has come a long way, in every age have lived different things and our music has evolved at the same history, the musicians who have been in the band have also defined each time.
Today we are full of what we do, we’re a humble band and only aim to do good work and reach people. At the time of the past when we were younger we lived the music with the same idea today, nothing has changed our feeling.

I’m really surprised by your activity! In spite ZARPA was not so much active in ‘70s, ‘80s, and even on hiatus during ‘90s – you have released TONS of albums, and they all are great albums! I am afraid to ask but I will – are all of those albums were composed during the times of hiatus?

I have Always Been writing, in the 80s was not lucky enough to be reliable to edit all the materials in the 90 but did not Have a stable band but continued composing. Since 2002 I follow a system of composition and editing That is giving me very good results, today is very easy to record and that helped me a lot.

Vicente Feijóo – what about original band members? If you tried to gather them again (I mean the guys from ‘70s)? In addition, how was difficult to find new line-up?

The boys of the first formation 24 years ago that left the music as musicians, now they are sound technicians and are very good. Our destinies going for diferents roads.
ZARPA Until today had various formations since then and always guides by me, now I have a very very powerful single band, With Which I take very well. bringing together to the old members is impossible and i do not feel like.

So, are you on hiatus now, just relaxed and looking for album feedbacks, or did you started to compose new stuff immediately?

I do not make breaks, I’m already composing. Is it how I feel and I need.

What are your main musical influences? How huge is their influence in your sound?

All the good rock music. All fill in to me!

Is there some well-known musician in particular that you would like to use in one of your upcoming albums?

I have not thought of any, always I have more contact with unknown musicians.

What is your personal strategy for making your music heard by a larger audience?

Work a lot, persist in time, do good works.

Do you have any other hobby beside music?

I’m studio musician and session, I dedicate myself also to drawing and painting, I do illustrations, I’ve always been a football player and I’ve gotten to play in teams name as the VALENCIA C. F. I am a very good cook and very familiar… also a great father and grandfather!!! hahaha.

Are you all supported by your relatives towards your devotion to music?

I have always had the support of my family, especially my wife, now my daughter helps me in matters of management.
If you want to contact with her, please contact by mail at zarpamanagement@hotmail.com.

How’s the metal scene in Valencia right now? Is it easy to play gigs, to buy records etc there these days?

Here in Valencia we working very well, there are concerts every week and there are many quality bands, the public usually go to concerts and there are many concert halls.
There are few shops CDs, but people buy much online, I think there is now better health for Heavy Metal in Valencia a few years ago.
